The analysis and discussion of some meaningful examples will show how the identification and the correct interpretation of the musical contents in the visual arts can not only contribute to the reconstruction of the ancient musical practices, but also shed light on some cultural, religious and social aspects of the societies they were intended to.
The course will be divided into two parts:
I. History, theoretical assumptions and methodologies of Music Iconography.
II. Discussion of some Musical themes and characters in Western and Chinese visual art: Apollon and the Muses; Orpheus; the angels musician; music and dance on the Silk Road: the case of Qiuci and Dunhuang; music iconography and genres (e.g. The Han dynasty rubbing), the tops of memorial jars); the reception of Chinese music in Eighteenth-century European art.
The course aims to provide a general overview of the most meaningful visual themes and characters dealing with music in the Western art, including also some connection with the Chinese art
Lectures and classes using slides and handouts. On request, the teaching staff will provide extra support during the self-learning hours.
This module will be taught in a 4-week block mode.
Attendance and participation are expected at all class sessions.
Final Exam: This course will have a final exam (oral). These exams will evaluate students’ understanding of the material presented in the course, including all assigned readings and lecture material (including slides). These exams will include image identification.

Grades will be determined according to the following breakdown:
