This English-language course covers European industrial and intellectual property law, focusing on
patents and trademarks.
Module A, 30 hours (on patents, unfair competition, unfair commercial practices), is followed by Module B (on trademarks) for another 30 hours,
held by a second lecturer

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

a) Knowledge and understanding:

The course aims at providing the students with a basic and comprehensive knowledge of the main institutions and rules of industrial and intellectual property law in the European legal framework.

This knowledge and understanding will be developed through frontal lectures, problem-based interactive learning, practice exercises, group work and team work, role playing and simulations.

During the course the students will be encouraged to analyze and actively discuss cases and materials.

All cases and materials – including power point presentations, optional readings, exercises and multimedia contents – will be uploaded to the online platform.

The knowledge and understanding will be assessed during the course by means of written exercises and at the end of the course by means of a written examination.

b) Applying knowledge and understanding:

By the end of the course the students are expected to be able to examine and discuss cases and materials, applying the basic rules and principles of industrial and intellectual property law.

c) Making judgements:

By the end of the course the students are expected to be able to collect and process data and information in order to identify and autonomously provide solutions to practical cases brought to their attention, thus demonstrating the acquisition of an aptitude for problem solving.

The students will be able to analyse problems, identify the relevant rules and then interpret and apply them.

d) Communication skills:

The students will get familiar with the technical language of industrial and intellectual property law and will develop rhetorical and argumentative skills that will help them to interact efficiently with clients, courts, institutions and administrations in any kind of national and international context.

e) Learning skills:

The students will acquire the basics of industrial and intellectual property law.

The course is therefore primarily aimed at those who intend to become IP lawyers, both in-house and outside counsel, at those aspiring to become judges, or to join European or international organizations.

Lectures with presentations of case law by students.

Lezioni frontali con esposizione di casi giurisprudenziali affidate agli studenti.
