he Degree Course in Letters (L 10) is one of the oldest courses of the University of Salento and offers a solid basic training in the field of humanities. The student has the choice between two curricula: 1) Classical curriculum: it offers a solid basic training on the origins of European civilization, with specific reference to the Greek and Latin world, both in the philological-literary and historical-archaeological fields. The knowledge of at least one European Union language is also taken care of, as well as the ability to use IT tools. The training for an autonomous use of the correct methodologies in the study of classical civilization from a linguistic, literary and historical point of view is integrated by a program of in-depth study of moments and themes of Italian literature and at least one European literature. Developing the ability to refer directly to texts and documents in the original ancient languages, as well as in at least one European language other than Italian, this training also constitutes the fundamental prerequisite for continuing humanistic studies at a specialist level, with particular reference to classical studies. 2) Modern Curriculum: offers a solid basic education in literary, linguistic, historical and geographical studies, with particular reference to European civilization from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age. The knowledge of at least one European Union language is also taken care of, as well as the ability to use IT tools. Students learn to use the correct methodologies autonomously in literary, linguistic, historical and geographical studies, applied to the development of European civilization from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age; they deal in depth with moments and themes of Italian literature, including the contemporary age, and of at least one European literature. By developing the ability to directly refer to texts and documents in Latin and in the vernacular, as well as in at least one European language other than Italian, this training allows to continue at a specialist level humanistic studies, with particular reference to modern literary, linguistic and historical studies .

The course of study ends with a final written test on a topic related to one of the course's teachings. This written test must be discussed orally before a special commission. In this way, the student has the opportunity for the first time to write his own work and to test the knowledge, methodologies and tools he has learned in the three years of the course, while the commission will evaluate the written work as well the progress of the discussion, how to say the argumentative and expository skills, as well as the entire path of the student.

The Degree Course in Letters has its own Learning Agreement manager (dr. Saulo Delle Donne) and takes care of internationalization. It offers its students the opportunity to study at the following universities: Spain: Valencia and Valladolid Germany: Greifswald, Saarbrücken, Aachen and Freiburg Br, Belgium: Liège and Louvain-La-Neuve, France: Aix-Marseille and Anger, Poland: Poznam and Torun, Romania: Bucharest.
