Course description

The Bachelor's Degree in Literature (L 10) is one of the oldest courses at the University of Salento and offers a solid basic education in the field of humanistic studies.
The student can choose between three curricula:

1) Classical Curriculum: offers a solid basic education on the origins of European civilization in both the philological-literary and historical-archaeological fields, with specific reference to the Greek and Latin world and with in-depth studies on the cultures of the ancient Near East and on the civilization of the European Middle Ages. Knowledge of at least one European Union language is also encouraged, as well as the ability to use IT tools. Training in the independent use of correct methodologies in the study of classical and medieval civilizations from a linguistic, literary and historical point of view is integrated with a program of in-depth study of moments and themes of Italian literature and at least one European literature. By developing the ability to directly access texts and documents in the original ancient languages, as well as in at least one European language other than Italian, this training also constitutes the fundamental prerequisite for continuing humanistic studies at a specialist level, with particular reference to classical studies.

2) Modern curriculum: offers a solid basic education in literary, linguistic, historical and geographical studies, with particular reference to European civilisation in its Latin roots and in its development from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age. Knowledge of at least one language of the European Union is also encouraged, as well as the ability to use IT tools. Students learn to independently use the correct methodologies in the studies undertaken, also thanks to teachings that encourage a philological or literary-critical approach, and deal in depth with moments and themes of Italian literature, including the contemporary age, and of at least one European literature. By developing the ability to directly access texts and documents in Latin and vernacular, as well as in at least one European language other than Italian, this training allows students to continue their humanistic studies at a specialist level, with particular reference to modern literary, linguistic and historical studies.

3) Contemporary curriculum: offers a solid education in the historical-geographical, linguistic and literary fields, characterised by an enhancement in the field of modern languages and a global openness towards literary civilisations closely linked (even if through the filter of translations) to the European one (Russian, Arabic and Hebrew). The training path continues to recognise its starting point in the teaching of Greek and Latin literary civilisation, albeit through the study of translated texts, but includes interdisciplinary explorations in the artistic field (with teaching in the field of art history, cinema and theatre) and philosophy. The possibility of having students take the traditional exam in Latin Language and Literature is not excluded, which is necessary for anyone who does not wish to preclude themselves from the possibility of accessing teaching. By developing linguistic and literary skills, the curriculum is particularly suitable for those who foresee a future career path other than teaching and more oriented towards other sectors (journalism, publishing, story-telling, etc.). The training offer nevertheless provides the knowledge necessary to access further levels in the field of historical and literary studies.
To successfully attend the Degree Course in Literature, adequate initial preparation is required, consisting of linguistic skills and cultural knowledge common to Secondary Education Institutes, with particular reference to an appropriate basic knowledge of the notions of Italian, History, Geography, of the A1 vs A2 level of English or French, of Latin and/or Greek for the courses that include these teachings.
To be admitted, therefore, it is necessary to have a Secondary School Diploma or another qualification obtained abroad and recognized as suitable.
A verification of the knowledge required for access is foreseen.
For the verification methods, for the indication of the additional training obligations (OFA) foreseen in the event that the verification is not positive, and for the methods with which the same must be filled, refer to the relevant section of the Course Teaching Regulations.
The OFA can be differentiated on the basis of the curricula.
