The Department of Humanities is characterized by a wide-range of scientific areas encompassing: Classical Philology and Papyrology, Philosophy, Italian Studies, Foreign Western and Eastern Languages, Literatures, Cultures, Linguistics and their Didactics, and the transversal areas of Pedagogy, Semiotics and History.
The research excellences in the Department (attested by the national and international projects funded on the basis of competitive announcements) characterize the study programmes, thanks to the solid scientific collaborations between departmental scholars and renowned European and non-European Universities. Indeed, the Department of Humanities offers international courses also aimed at the achievement of final post-graduate double or joint degrees, and it is the only Department in the University of Salento to boast two long-standing international doctoral programmes aimed at final double and joint degrees – namely: the former in Philosophical Studies, in a convention with the partner Universities of Paris Sorbonne and Cologne, and the latter in Linguistics, Philological and Literary Studies in convention with the University of Vienna.
