Course description

The degree course in Biomedical Engineering aims to train professionals capable of synergistically integrating the typical skills of graduates from the industrial engineering class (L09) with some specific skills from the field of information and systems for biomedical applications.
Admission to the degree course requires an upper secondary school qualification or equivalent, and an adequate technical-scientific background as required for upper secondary school teaching in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, to be verified by a compulsory admission test. Knowledge of English at B1 level of the Common European Framework of Languages is also advisable, but is not assessed in the admission test.
Students who, on the basis of the test results, do not achieve an adequate preparation will be assigned Additional Formative Obligations (OFAs,) relating to the disciplines in which the student has educational gaps, which must be filled in the first year.
Graduates in Biomedical Engineering will be able to work in industry, hospitals, healthcare facilities and specialised clinical laboratories, as well as in research centres and universities as a technical figure in laboratory settings. This figure can be employed in industry involved in the production, management and testing of biomedical devices and equipment, devices for treatment and rehabilitation, and devices for controlled release. In addition, the biomedical engineer may be employed in the solution of methodological and technological problems, in the delivery of healthcare services and in the use of appropriate medical software for diagnostic assistance. Finally, the Biomedical Engineering graduate can be employed as a technical support engineer for quality, safety and organisational services in healthcare.
The final examination consists in the presentation of a written paper, even if not characterised by a particular originality, aimed at verifying maturity acquired and expository capacity. The final examination constitutes an individual training opportunity to complete the curricular course.
The paper proposed for the final examination, which relates to a practical-operational experience, is written by the student, who receives assistance from a lecturer (supervisor) during the course of the assigned work.
The assignment of the thesis advisor, the manner in which the thesis is discussed and the awarding of the grade are governed by the provisions set out in the didactic regulations of the CoS.
