The Master's Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery will enrich the professionalism of the surgeon with specific technological and methodological skills in the field of biomedical engineering, in response to the need for innovation widely felt in the health field.
The world of healthcare is evolving rapidly in the face of the new challenges imposed, in the field of health, by the characteristics of modern society, and the world of healthcare is destined to be transformed in the coming years, under the impetus of technological innovation, the increase in interdisciplinarity in medicine and medical training, in order to cope with the major changes in modern society which is going through a phase of 'epidemiological transition'.
In the future, medicine could be more predictive, preventive, personalised and participatory. Medicine will make use of better tools for prediction and prevention, genomics may lead to personalised medicine, medicine will increasingly make use of bioinformatics, big data and artificial intelligence, health care may also make use of remote technologies, major breakthroughs are expected in the field of regenerative medicine and robotics.
The Master's Degree Course intends to meet these challenges, and, to achieve this goal, the training pathway will integrate educational activities typically required for the training of a medical surgeon, with educational activities typical of biotechnological and biomedical engineering training, with a view to training a professional figure who, in addition to being able to practice the medical-surgical profession, is able to apply or develop technological solutions in the direction of disease prevention and treatment, support for ageing and health emergencies.
The study course has a nationally programmed number of students.
Admission to the course requires a secondary school diploma or another qualification obtained abroad and recognised as suitable. The knowledge required for admission is defined by the subjects included in the planned national written test for admission.
In each academic year the MUR issues a decree establishing the contents of the admission notice issued by the University. The subjects covered by the examination are: general culture and logical reasoning, physics and mathematics, chemistry, biology.
Possession of the knowledge required for admission to the course is verified by passing the admission test.
The results of the admission test will be used to verify the need to assign Additional Educational Obligations (OFA) in the basic subjects (biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics) to be satisfied within the first year of the course.
Failure to satisfy any OFAs in one or more of the basic subjects precludes the student from taking examinations in the same subject area.
Admission to the single-cycle Master's Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery takes into account ministerial planning and is based on a national ranking list. The number of places available for admission to the first year of the course is assigned by ministerial decree.
Admission to the course is subject to passing a special admission test (based on multiple-choice quizzes) and on the basis of a quota of places, indicated for each academic year in the admission notice. The methods and content of the test are established at ministerial level. The admission tests, which are identical in content throughout Italy, are set by the Ministry.
The assessment of any Additional Educational Obligation (OFA) will be carried out taking into account the marks obtained by the candidates in the admission test.
The professional figure trained will have work opportunities in: i.) Territorial medicine, both in the function of General Practitioner and in outpatient clinics and public or private specialist diagnostic laboratories, and structures dedicated to the management of chronic conditions also through Telemedicine; ii.) Hospitals and specialist centres; iii.) Healthcare facilities for patients with chronic and/or progressive pathologies; iv.) Universities and Research Centres; v.) National and international healthcare organisations; vi.) Pharmaceutical and biomedical companies; vii.) Public and private bodies managing health services.
The final examination consists in the discussion of a thesis written in an original way by the student under the supervision of one or more supervisors and is intended to verify the scientific maturity of the student at the end of the course of study through the specific activity carried out on the subject of the thesis work.
Students may also write their theses in English.
The type of activity connected with the thesis, the procedures for the final examination and the awarding of the qualification are governed by the Regulations for the awarding of the qualification, as set out in the University's Teaching Regulations. The dissertation regulations will be made available not only on the course website but also on Universitaly, in the specific section of A5, by the beginning of the second year of the 2021/22 cohort.
