EDUCATIONAL AIMS

In the last few years, system complexity has been growing exponentially, with the objective of improving characteristics and functions of existing products (e.g. automotive industry increasingly relying on ICT), delivering new products and services (distributed systems of sensors, possibly operating in networks, UAV’s, smart materials, etc.), and novel systems for production and distribution of goods and services (smart grids, smart factories, smart cities, ecc.). The Ph.D. course aims at developing those capabilities necessary for managing this deep level of interaction between diverse technical backgrounds. The design process no longer hinges on a sequential process, with different technical aspects considered one at the time. Nowadays, new opportunities for innovation are created by the interaction between different fields. A wide spectrum of diverse know-hows within the Ph.D. program Committee, contacts with industries and a network of national and international collaborations with universities and research centers allows challenging our Ph.D. students on various problems of different nature in different technical frameworks, related to basic research, design, and production.

RESEARCH THEMES

  • Internet of things
  • Big Data and related technologies
  • Robotics and mechatronics
  • Telecommunications and applied electromagnetics
  • Industry 4.0 and advanced manufacturing
  • Aerospace engineering
  • Automotive engineering
  • Power systems and renewable energies
  • Environmental engineering

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The program aims at training highly qualified experts, with a solid background covering engineering disciplines and applied sciences. A good understanding of problems and challenges that characterize scientific and technological innovation is expected. The autonomous research pattern followed during the three years course in a multidisciplinary context is aimed at developing original and technologically innovative solutions to old and new problems. The resulting qualification allows one to pursue a career in an academic environmnet, public and private research centers, or companies with a significan push for technological innovation.

REGIONAL TAX

All students enrolled in the PhD have to pay annually the "Regional tax for the Right to Education" in accordance with the amounts set annually by the Puglia region Right to Education agency (ADISU). This may vary from a minimum of 120,00€ to a maximum of 160,00€ per year. Further details, including the amount of any due stamp duty, are available in the "Call for applications" documents.
