Teaching description
There is no prerequisite with other courses.
Basic knowledge of elements of linear algebra at secondary school level is required
Statistical methods for tourism course:
- provides the theoretical basis for dealing with a statistical survey with a rigorous scientific approach,
- proposes the study of fundamental statistical indicators for the descriptive analysis of qualitative and quantitative variables, with a particular focus on the tourism sector.
The course aims to provide:
- acquisition of the tools of Descriptive Statistics in order to explore, summarize, present and interpret observations related to collective phenomena,
- knowledge of the most widely used official statistical sources at national and international level (ISTAT, Statistics Offices of the Ministry of Cultural Activities and Tourism, National Tourism Board, National Observatory for Tourism, United Nations World Tourism Organization, Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, etc.) for data collection,
- ability to explain the results of the statistical analyses carried out.
Expected learning outcomes according to Dublin Descriptors:
Knowledge and understanding:
- Acquisition of the tools of Descriptive Statistics in order to summarize, present and interpret the observations related to collective phenomena of economic and social phenomena focusing on culture, business, environment and tourism.
- Knowledge of the most used official statistical sources at national and international level (ISTAT, Statistics Offices of the Ministry of Cultural Activities and Tourism, National Tourism Board, National Observatory for Tourism, United Nations World Tourism Organization, Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, etc.) for data collection.
Applying knowledge and understanding
- Ability to collect data, to store them in appropriately defined databases, to process them and to present the results obtained.
- Ability to read and evaluate the metadata associated to statistical sources.
- Ability to perceive economic problems and their analysis through the statistical method.
Making judgements
Ability to evaluate the results obtained from the calculation of statistical indicators and to define the most suitable methods for achieving the results.
Communication skills
Ability to clearly present the results of the statistical analyses performed and the sampling scheme chosen.
Learning skills
Ability to learn the various phases of conducting a statistical survey.
In-person lectures on theoretical and practical aspects with the use of audiovisual supports.
In-person examination
The examination consists of a written test and an oral test (optional*) accessible after passing the written exam
For attending students, the written test can be divided into 2 partial written tests, which will take place in accordance with the teaching calendar.
Upon completion of the examination, the actual outcome of the exam taken by the students will be recorded on the online registration system (ESSE3), also specifying the case of "withdrawn", "absent" or "insufficient" , in compliance with the Rector's note of April 28 th, 2022. In addition, the positive outcome of the partial examination can be retained valid upon request of the student until the end of the academic year in which it was taken, as indicated in the Rector's note of April 28 th, 2022.
The examination is passed when a mark of at least 18/30 (with possible award of the honors/laude) is given. Also the corresponding ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) are assigned. The student passing the examination acquires notions which are recognized according to the Dublin descriptors.
"The disabled student and/or student with learning disability, who intends to take advantage of an individualized intervention to carry out the examination have to contact the Disabled Integration Office of the University of Salento (contact reference person: paola.martino@unisalento.it).
Program and text books are the same for both students regularly attending and not regularly attending the lessons.

Other useful information
- The attendance of lessons, although not mandatory, is highly recommended.
-Examination booking on the web site studenti.unisalento.it has to be verified by printing the corresponding receipt or its picture.
In case of technical problems, the student has to contact the teacher at least 7 days before the date of examination, in accordance with the deadline published in the system.
-Requests for postponing the oral examination, can be sent by e-mail to the teacher only if it has forwarded within two days before the date of examination. Alternatively, the postponement of the exam can be requested the day fixed for the examination during the roll-call. Postponements are possible only within twelve months, since the positive outcome of the first partial examination can be retained valid upon request of the student until the end of the academic year in which it was taken (ref. Rector's note of April 28 th, 2022).
