Course description

The Degree Course in “Chemistry for Sustainability” belongs to the L-27 class and lasts three years.

The Degree Course is organized into a single path that includes training contributions specific to the area of chemical sciences and disciplines from the area of mathematical, computer science and physical sciences. The degree course differs from those of the same class at regional level for the presence of a significant number of CFU dedicated and/or correlated with the themes of sustainability (SSD CHIM/*) and for specific contributions of biology at molecular level (SSD BIO/09, BIO/10, BIO/11, SECS-P/13, ING-IND/24).

The aim of the degree course is to train a professional figure capable of responding to the needs of the Ecological Transition and the Green Deal of the European Union, acquiring competitiveness at national and international level, required both by public institutions and administrations and by the private job market.

The degree course also includes a period of internship at cutting-edge research centers, public and private institutions, companies, laboratories and consultancy firms.

The degree thesis includes the development of a project proposal in a discipline of the study plan on a topic of significant scientific development, which can also contribute to the acquisition of skills transversal useful for the formation of a complete professional figure.

To promote internationalization, the Degree Course will activate Erasmus exchange programs and other international programs at the University of Salento. Furthermore, contacts will be established with foreign universities in order to promote the acquisition of the double degree.

The three-year graduate in “Chemistry for Sustainability” will be able to continue his/her education in a natural way by enrolling in Master's Degree Courses of the LM-54 class active at the various universities, including those in Puglia, for which he/she has the access requirements based on the three-year training path undertaken. Furthermore, the three-year graduate in “Chemistry for Sustainability” will be able to continue his/her education in courses of other classes that also admit three-year graduates of the L-27 class.

The main employment opportunities for graduates in the Degree Course will be to work as: Junior Chemist at public and private research institutions; Quality control technician; Technician in analysis, control and quality certification laboratories; Consultant or freelancer; Chemist in industry.

The Degree Course in “Chemistry for Sustainability” does not have a restricted number of places and the number of students expected in the 1st year is 60.
To be admitted to the Degree Course, it is necessary to have at least one of the following qualifications:
- secondary school diploma;
- qualification obtained abroad declared equivalent to an Italian secondary school diploma.

Furthermore, for the purposes of access and a successful inclusion in the educational path of the Degree Course, good knowledge of the basic notions of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are required, in line with the secondary school programs.

The methods of verifying the initial preparation, the criteria for the assignment of specific Additional Training Obligations (OFA) and the methods of recovering the OFA are specified in the Teaching Regulations of the Degree Course.

Profile

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry (degree class L-27)

Functions

The Graduate in Chemistry for Sustainability will collaborate, with technical-operational tasks, in professional activities with technological applications of chemical methodologies in Industry, Local Administrations, Public Organizations and Private Companies.

Skills

The Graduate in Chemistry for Sustainability will have technical-operational skills in various areas of chemistry, such as chemical synthesis and analysis, the study of chemical processes, chemical technologies.
For the development of the functions in a working context, the following skills and abilities are required:
- ability to use adequate and up-to-date methodologies;
- ability to produce technical reports;
- ability to work in interdisciplinary groups and to relate and interact with graduates in other fields. disciplines.

To acquire greater autonomy and greater levels of responsibility in carrying out some of the activities and functions listed, constant updating in the legislative field and available technologies and an integration of knowledge to delve into specific topics through post-graduate courses will be necessary.

Sbocco

As defined by Ministerial Decree no. 1648 of 12/19/2023, graduates of class L-27 will be able to find employment in technical roles in companies in the field of production and transformation of substances and materials, in analysis, characterization and quality control laboratories, research and development, in the commercial field (sales, marketing, technical assistance), in the field of certification, environmental control, hygiene and safety at work, management of logistics and purchasing of raw materials and chemical products, management of pilot plants, consultancy in chemical and applied chemistry. They may also find employment in public bodies, or carry out professional activities in work environments that require knowledge of the scientific method and the ability to apply methods, techniques and adequate scientific instrumentation.

In particular, three-year graduates of the Degree Course in Chemistry for Sustainability, by virtue of the adequate training received, may continue their studies in Master's Degree Courses in the field of chemical sciences and technologies. During the three-year course of study, carrying out a training internship in companies, public administration structures, laboratories, can certainly facilitate entry into the world of work for first level graduates in Chemistry for Sustainability who do not intend to continue their university studies. Graduates from the Degree Course in Chemistry for Sustainability can in fact find various professional opportunities, having as their main reference sectors public and private research institutions, local administrations, industries, where they can also be placed in chemical analysis laboratories. Furthermore, they can find employment in work environments that require basic knowledge in the chemical sectors, such as monitoring and control of industrial processes, quality control, safeguarding and protection of workers and work environments and cultural heritage. In these work contexts, the entry of the graduate in Chemistry for Sustainability will be favored by the acquired ability to apply the multiple investigative methods acquired, in the sectors of synthesis and characterization of new materials, health (including related diagnostics), nutrition, environment and energy.

In particular, the knowledge acquired will allow a three-year graduate in Chemistry for Sustainability to:

⇒ Work as a chemical technician.
His activity in the pharmaceutical or chemical production industries will consist of:
o assisting specialists in the analysis of solid, liquid and gaseous materials conducted in the field of chemical research or for production activities, which require the application of chemistry procedures and protocols, aimed at the development of new products or processes
o assisting specialists in production quality control, control and maintenance of environmental quality standards, operation and safety of equipment, plants and related systems technicians.

⇒ Work as a Junior Chemist at public and private research institutions or as a freelancer.

The professional activities that members of the Order of Chemists and Physicists, section B - Chemistry can access are detailed in the Document approved by the National Federation of the Orders of Chemists and Physicists in February 2019 available at the following link: https://www.chimicifisici.it/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/attivita-professionali.pdf

It will also be possible to continue the training path by accessing the LM-54 master's degree courses already active in the Puglia region, or in other regions. Furthermore, the presence in the study plan of disciplines from the sectors of biology, at the molecular level, and physics can also allow access to the master's degrees in the area of environmental sciences, biotechnology, materials engineering and nanotechnology, already operating at the University of Salento, subject to verification of the curricular requirements that regulate access. It will be possible to reach the admission requirements of the various master's degree courses also through the integration of credits, among those chosen, with preference for the subjects that characterize the training paths of each curriculum.
The final exam for the achievement of the Degree in Chemistry for Sustainability consists in the drafting of an experimental and/or theoretical paper on a topic of interest, linked to the knowledge acquired through the courses of the study plan, under the guidance of at least one supervisor.

The paper is evaluated by a Reading Commissioner appointed by the President of the Teaching Council, who issues a judgment.

The Degree Commission, appointed by the President of the Teaching Council and composed of at least three members (including the President and Supervisor), on the basis of the judgments of the Reading Commissioners and of what is established by the Regulations for the First Level Degree in Chemistry for Sustainability, establishes the degree grade and awards the qualification.
