Course description
The Master's Degree in Physics is divided into curricula corresponding to different fields of research in Physics.
In these curricula the most important theoretical and experimental developments for the reference sector are studied and differentiated laboratory activities are carried out in which the most recent and sophisticated measurement, analysis and data processing methods are tested and numerical and symbolic calculation techniques are acquired. Alternatively, the student presents a proposal for a personalized study plan, whose cultural coherence will be evaluated by the Teaching Council.
The training course ends with the preparation of the final exam, preceded by any internship and orientation activities useful for acquiring further skills necessary for carrying out the thesis work and/or for subsequent entry into the world of work.
The organization of the Master's Degree Course in different specialized curricula involves the presence in the System of wide ranges of variation of the CFU in the different areas of the characterizing Disciplines, in order to achieve a high scientific preparation in each training course.
Students who apply to enroll in the Master's Degree in Physics must be in possession of a three-year degree (pursuant to Ministerial Decree 270/04 or previous regulations), or another qualification obtained abroad recognized as equivalent according to current legislation, provided that it is able to demonstrate the acquisition of knowledge consistent with the activities envisaged by the ministerial tables of the Degree class in Physical Sciences and Technologies.
Specifically, the applicants' study curricula must present a total of no less than 90 CFU in the scientific-disciplinary sectors MAT/*, FIS/*, CHIM/*, INF/01, ING-INF/01-02, ING-INF/05, ING-INF/07, ING-IND/09-10, ING-IND/18-20, ING-IND/22-23, GEO/10, GEO/11, GEO/12; of these CFU no less than 60 must refer to the scientific-disciplinary sectors MAT/*, FIS/*.
The candidate must in particular possess:
- adequate knowledge and operational capacity in Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Linear Algebra, as well as the basic notions of General Chemistry;
- in-depth knowledge of Classical Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism and Optics and basic knowledge of Modern Physics;
- the ability to use computer calculation tools;
- a level of knowledge of the English language at least equal to level B1.
All candidates will be assessed on their personal preparation in accordance with the methods indicated in the Course of Study's Teaching Regulations.
Profile
Specialist PhysicistFunctions
The Specialist Physicist has a qualified and specific training that allows him to carry out - directly or after perfecting the training with further study activities of a more advanced level (Doctorate, Master's degree II, Specialization Schools) - research and development tasks in universities, research institutions and companies operating in the industrial and/or tertiary sector.The Specialist Physicist will be able to carry out the following functions:
- research in the advanced sectors of nuclear physics and radiation protection, physics of matter, nanotechnologies, microelectronics, computational and data management techniques, space and satellite techniques, as well as in medical diagnostic technologies and for cultural heritage.
- management and design of high-tech equipment in the sectors of industry, the environment, health, cultural heritage and public administration;
- teaching, training, high-level dissemination of scientific culture, promotion of the development of scientific and technological innovation.
- organization and coordination of work groups, including multidisciplinary ones, in both national and international contexts.
Skills
The Specialist Physicist will have acquired:- a high level of knowledge and experience in the field of macro and microphysics that allows him to critically interpret and discuss facts, concepts, essential principles and theories relating to specialist areas of physics;
- an in-depth knowledge of modern measurement instruments and data analysis techniques, which enables him to analyze, process and interpret experimental measurements in the light of appropriate theories;
- an in-depth knowledge of mathematical and IT support tools;
- predisposition to rapidly learn innovative methodologies and technologies and the ability to use scientific laboratory equipment even in an interdisciplinary context.
Sbocco
The Specialist Physicist finds career opportunities, including at a design and managerial level, at- Universities, public and private research institutions and centers
- National and regional agencies for the protection of cultural heritage and the environment and the study and prevention of risks
- Biomedical research institutions and hospital facilities
- Study and design laboratories in public and private companies
- Quality certification laboratories for industrial production
- Data processing and modeling centers
- High-tech companies
- Banking and financial consulting institutions.
Master's degree graduates in possession of the credits required by current legislation will be able to participate in the entrance exams for the training courses for teaching staff for lower and upper secondary schools.
The Thesis consists of a written report, on an original application of a theoretical, experimental or technological nature, to a specific problem of interest for research appropriately framed in the field of modern physics and its applications or in an interdisciplinary field with the use of typical physics methodologies. It must demonstrate the cultural maturity and the capacity of the graduate to personally and autonomously elaborate the topic, and his ability to effectively communicate the topic addressed.
