Course description

Three curricular options: 1) Unisalento, 2) Unisalento-Essex (UK) Double Degree, 3) Unisalento-ASMU (Iran) Double Degree. At Unisalento the focus is on translation and interpreting practice between English and Italian, and optionally in a further language (Arabic, French, Chinese, Japanese, German, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish). All students will study linguistics, translation theory and practice and CAT tools. Particular attention is paid to translation for heritage tourism, the medical field and to audiovisual translation. The Double Degree courses follow a Unisalento study path for the first year and partner university for the second. At Essex the focus is on English-Italian interpreting/translating and AVT. At ASMU, translation theory, terminology and literature.
Oral interview with sight translation assesses student aptitude, level of comprehension and production in English and Italian, plus any second language chosen. Language levels: English (C1); Italian (C2 for native Italians) or (B2 for foreigners); Spanish, French, German, Portuguese (B2); other languages (B1). For ASMU only English is required, no sight translation.
The course trains professionals for specialised translation – theory and practice for the language pair(s) studied, advanced English – as well as in liaison and consecutive interpreting (with note-taking) for English. Careers in translating and interpreting, from public service to medical and to heritage, audiovisual translation (cinema, documentary), proof reading and copywriting.
A written thesis and viva based on the course of studies. The student chooses a supervisor and a co-supervisor from the field(s) of study. According to curricula, the thesis will be written and defended either in the home or host University.
