Course description

The Degree Course in Environmental Sciences and Technologies is part of Class L-32 of Degrees in Environmental and Natural Sciences and Technologies, lasts 3 years and requires that to access it, it is sufficient to have a five-year high school diploma or another qualification obtained abroad recognized as equivalent, without any selective entrance test.

Enrollment in the Course requires in any case the mandatory verification of the initial preparation according to the terms and methods specified in Table A3 of this sheet.

The Degree Course aims to train graduates who must possess a systemic culture of the environment and good practice of the scientific method for the analysis of components and factors of processes, systems and problems concerning the environment, both natural and modified by human beings. This allows them to continue their studies by directing themselves towards Master's Degree Courses on environmental topics. The contribution of the mathematical, physical, chemical, ecological and naturalistic disciplines represents the basis on which the characterizing training activities build the specificity of the Degree Course, touching on the different aspects of Environmental Sciences.

The professional opportunities of the Graduate in Environmental Sciences and Technologies include technical and collaboration activities with local administrations, public organizations and private companies both in the field of sampling, monitoring and integrated analysis of environmental matrices in their abiotic and biotic components of ecosystems and related environmental processes, and in the field of environmental assessments to support environmental and territorial planning for sustainability.

To obtain the final academic qualification it is necessary to acquire 180 CFU (University Training Credits).
To be admitted to the Degree Course in Environmental Science and Technology, you must have a five-year high school diploma or another qualification obtained abroad that is recognized as equivalent.

The Degree Course in Environmental Science and Technology is open to all, but for the purposes of access and successful inclusion in the educational path of the Degree Course, good knowledge of the basic notions of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Sciences is required.

Students must take a test to verify that they possess the knowledge required for access. If the knowledge assessment is not satisfactory, Additional Training Obligations (OFA) will be assigned to be satisfied in the first year of the course. The criteria for assigning OFAs are reported in the Degree Course Teaching Regulations.

Profile

Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences.

Functions

The Graduate in Environmental Sciences and Technologies will be able to collaborate, with technical-operational tasks:
- in surveying, classification, analysis of abiotic and biotic components of natural, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems;
- in the analysis and monitoring of environmental systems and processes managed by humans, from the perspective of sustainability and prevention, for the purpose of promoting environmental quality;
- in activities carried out in parks and nature reserves, in scientific museums and educational centers.
To acquire greater autonomy and greater levels of responsibility in carrying out some of the activities and functions listed, constant updating in the legislative field and available technologies and an integration of knowledge is necessary to delve into specific topics through post-graduate courses.

Skills

The Graduate in Environmental Sciences and Technologies will have technical-operational skills in various areas of Environmental Sciences, such as the conservation of nature and its resources and environmental accounting, in addition to supporting environmental management with adequate knowledge of regulatory aspects in the environmental field.
For the development of functions in a working context, the following skills and abilities are required:
- ability to use adequate and up-to-date methodologies;
- ability to collaborate in the definition of sampling designs;
- ability to correctly perform sampling and survey operations;
- knowledge and ability to use geographic information systems;
- ability to produce technical reports.
Furthermore, the Graduate in Environmental Sciences and Technologies is able to work in interdisciplinary groups and to relate and interact with graduates in other disciplines.

Sbocco

The ... Career opportunities for the Graduate in Environmental Sciences and Technologies include technical and collaborative activities in local administrations, public organizations and private companies in the following areas:
- sampling, monitoring and integrated analysis of environmental matrices in their abiotic and biotic components of ecosystems and related environmental processes thanks to the skills acquired in the biological, ecological, earth science and chemical learning areas;
- support in the evaluation of the quality of ecological-environmental systems and in environmental and territorial management and planning for sustainability thanks to the skills acquired in the biological, ecological, earth science and chemical learning areas;
- collaboration in the management of environmental issues of the production system, in the evaluation of impacts and in the management of Territorial Information Systems and in the production of thematic cartography thanks to the skills acquired in the biological, ecological, chemical and economic-legal learning areas;
- services in the environmental systems of territorial bodies that deal with the environment (public administrations, ARPA, AUSL, trade unions, etc.) in support of impact studies, assessment of the health of ecological-environmental systems, environmental accounting processes thanks to the skills acquired in the areas of biological, ecological, chemical, earth sciences and economic-legal learning;
- support in the recovery activities of degraded environments and their restoration and in quality control and eco-sustainable production, thanks to the skills acquired in the areas of biological, ecological, chemical, earth sciences.

The professions regulated by the Law that the Graduate in Environmental Sciences and Technologies can access after an exam and/or internship are (Presidential Decree 328/2001 and Ministerial Decree 386/2007 Annex 2):
- junior planner (section B professional register of the order of architects, planners, landscape architects and conservationists);
- junior biologist (section B professional register of the order of biologists);
- graduated agricultural technician;
- graduated agricultural expert.

Furthermore, the Graduate in Environmental Sciences and Technologies Environment can join the Italian Environmental Sciences Association (AISA), a professional association of a technical-scientific and cultural nature registered pursuant to Law No. 4/2013 at the MISE - Ministry of Economic Development and included in the Register of Legal Persons at No. 979/2014 at the Prefecture of Rome.

To acquire greater autonomy and greater levels of responsibility in carrying out some of the activities and functions listed, constant updating in the legislative field and available technologies is necessary, as well as an integration of knowledge to delve into specific topics through post-graduate courses.
The final exam for the achievement of the Degree in Environmental Sciences and Technologies consists in the presentation of a thesis developed by the student on a topic of environmental interest connected to the knowledge acquired through the courses of the study plan, under the guidance of at least one supervisor. The final exam must highlight: a) cultural maturity, b) the graduate's ability to personally elaborate the topic, c) the ability to insert the topic addressed within the scope of the transversal skills acquired, d) his ability to effectively address the topic addressed. The degree grade is expressed in hundred-tenths with possible honors and takes into account the outcome of the final exam, the overall path of the student, the scientific and professional preparation and maturity achieved.
A specific Regulation established by the Competent Teaching Body determines the criteria and methods for assigning the topic, the supervisor and the degree grade.
