Course description

The Degree Course in “Medical Physics” belongs to the LM-17 class and lasts two years. The Degree Course does not have a restricted number of places.
The Degree Course in “Medical Physics” is characterized by an educational approach that includes, in addition to the typical contents of the master's degree courses in physics, also specific contributions from disciplinary fields of biological sciences and medical sciences with particular reference to nuclear medicine and radiotherapy. The aim is to train a professional figure capable of responding to the demands of the job market and research (both public and private) in the advanced sectors of applied nuclear physics, radiation protection, development of biomedical instrumentation, technologies and methodologies for medical diagnostics and therapy. The degree course aims to train a graduate in Medical Physics capable of managing and designing complex, high-tech equipment for applications in the medical field in the public sector (public health facilities and companies), private sector (medical diagnostic centers, private clinics) and industrial sector (biomedical instrumentation and radiopharmaceutical production companies). This acquired knowledge is added to the skills that are conventionally obtained by the graduate in Physics with regard to teaching, training, dissemination of scientific culture, promotion of the development of scientific and technological innovation and finally the organization and coordination of work groups, including multidisciplinary ones, in both national and international contexts.
To pursue these objectives, the Degree Course is organized into a single curriculum that includes training contributions specific to the area of physical sciences and disciplines specific to the area of chemical sciences, biological sciences and medical sciences.
The Degree Course also provides for the integration of theoretical training with periods of internship at both public and private health facilities, research centers, companies, laboratories, consultancy firms and freelance professionals.
The Master's Degree in Medical Physics does not have restricted access.
Students who request to enroll in the Master's Degree in Medical Physics must have a three-year degree (pursuant to Ministerial Decree 270/04 or previous regulations) in the degree classes L-7, L-8, L-9, L-30 and L-35, or another qualification obtained abroad recognized as equivalent according to current legislation, provided that it is able to demonstrate the acquisition of knowledge consistent with the activities envisaged by the ministerial tables of the degree class in Physical Sciences and Technologies.
The candidate must in particular possess:
- adequate knowledge and operational capacity in Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Linear Algebra, as well as basic notions of General Chemistry;
- knowledge of Classical Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism and Optics and basic knowledge of
Modern Physics;
- the ability to use computer calculation tools;
- a level of knowledge of the English language at least equal to level B1.
All candidates will be assessed on their personal preparation in the manner indicated in the Course of Study Regulations.

Profile

Medical Physicist Master's Degree

Functions

The Graduate Master in Medical Physics has a qualified and specific preparation that allows him to carry out, directly or after perfecting the preparation with further study activities of a more advanced level (Doctorate, Master's Degree II, Specialization Schools), research and development tasks in universities, research institutions and companies operating in the industrial and/or tertiary sector.
The Medical Physicist Master will be able to carry out functions of:
- research in the advanced sectors of applied nuclear physics and radiation protection, applied matter physics (advanced sensors, bio-nanotechnologies, lab-on-chip), microelectronics for diagnostics and medical
therapy, computational techniques and data management;
- management and design of high-tech equipment in the industrial, environmental and healthcare sectors and public administration;
- teaching, training, dissemination of scientific culture, promotion of the development of scientific and technological innovation;
- organization and coordination of working groups, including multidisciplinary ones, in both national and international contexts.

Skills

The Master's Degree Medical Physicist will have acquired:
- a high level of knowledge and experience in the field of macro and microphysics that allows him to critically interpret and discuss facts, concepts, essential principles and theories relating to specialist areas of physics with particular reference to the medical field;
- an in-depth knowledge of modern diagnostic instruments to analyze, process and interpret experimental data and measurements in the light of appropriate theories;
- an in-depth knowledge of mathematical and IT support tools also with reference to Machine Learning techniques, Artificial Intelligence and computational methods specific to radiation physics (Monte Carlo methods);
- predisposition to rapidly learning innovative methodologies and technologies and the ability to use equipment even in an interdisciplinary context.

Purpose

The graduate in Medical Physics finds professional opportunities, also at a design and managerial level, at
- Universities, public and private research institutions and centers;
- National and regional agencies for the protection of cultural heritage and the environment and the study and prevention of risks;
- Public and private health facilities;
- Biomedical research institutions and hospital facilities;
- Companies involved in the development, design and production of biomedical instrumentation;
- Study and design laboratories in public and private companies;
- Companies involved in the development and production of radiopharmaceuticals;
- Companies involved in radiation protection and monitoring of exposure to ionizing radiation of anthropogenic and natural origin;
- Freelance profession after registration in the National Federation of Chemists and Physicists and freelance professionals in the field of radiation protection;
- Quality certification laboratories for products and instruments and industrial production;
- Data processing and modeling centers;
- High-tech companies.
Master's degree graduates in possession of the credits required by current legislation will be able to participate in the entrance exams for the training courses for teaching staff for secondary schools of I and II level.
The exam for the Master's Degree in Medical Physics consists of the discussion, in the form of a short scientific seminar, of a paper (Thesis) prepared under the guidance of a supervisor, in front of a specially appointed Commission.
The Thesis consists of a written report, on an original application of a theoretical, experimental or technological nature, to a specific problem of interest for research appropriately framed in the field of modern physics and its applications or in an interdisciplinary field with the use of methodologies typical of medical physics. It must demonstrate the cultural maturity and the capacity of the graduate to personally and autonomously elaborate the topic, and his ability to effectively communicate the topic addressed.
