Course description

The Master's Degree in Mathematics has as its main objective the training of graduates who have a solid mathematical preparation for contents, methods and demonstration techniques.

The proposed activities allow theoretical or model-application training paths, trying, where possible, to introduce cutting-edge topics of current research in Mathematics.

The Course includes three curricula:

- a theoretical-modeling curriculum, which aims at the acquisition of specific high-level techniques in the fields of Pure Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Mathematical Analysis) and Applied Mathematics (Probability, Mathematical Physics, Numerical Calculus), aimed at developing the ability to tackle the study of real problems;
- a curriculum preparatory to teacher training, in which knowledge in the different areas of Mathematics is accompanied by specific preparation in the field of teaching methodologies;
- a curriculum dedicated to Artificial Intelligence, which provides tools mathematics, both theoretical and computational, to orient themselves in the field of Big Data in the various branches of knowledge, integrating theoretical training with courses on understanding, modeling and development of Neural Networks and Machine Learning.
Access to the master's degree is conditional on:
a) possession (at the time of enrollment) of university training credits obtained following activities which, overall, due to their content and breadth, allow for a profitable continuation of studies in a purely mathematical field. This condition is automatically verified by students in possession of a three-year degree in Mathematics (Class 32 of Mathematical Sciences, Ministerial Decree 509/99, Class L-35 of Mathematical Sciences Ministerial Decree 270/04).
For students coming from other Degree Courses, the minimum number of credits obtained in order to enroll is specified as follows:

- 32 CFU in SSD MAT/02, MAT/03, MAT/05, MAT/06, MAT/07, MAT/08;
- 9 CFU in SSD FIS/01;
- 6 CFU in SSD INF/01 or ING-INF/05.

b) the adequacy of the student's personal preparation. Verification of this requirement will be carried out through an individual interview of the candidate with a Commission appointed annually by the Teaching Council.

c) the ability to effectively use the English language in the specific area of expertise and for the exchange of general information. In the presence of a certificate of suitability of at least level B2, this condition is automatically verified. Otherwise, the candidate's linguistic knowledge will be verified in the individual interview.

Profile

Mathematicians

Functions

The graduate in Mathematics stands out for his mental flexibility and for the ability to identify the relevant elements for the analysis of situations and problems even in non-mathematical contexts, to independently identify the knowledge to be acquired for the management of a problem, to communicate clearly and without ambiguity. For this reason, he/she can take on roles of high responsibility, also as a member of interdisciplinary working groups, in work sectors in which advanced mathematical tools, both theoretical and applicative, play an explicitly recognized role.

Skills

- Ability to translate problems from other scientific disciplines into mathematical terms and to contribute to their solution, also using non-curricular knowledge.
- IT and computational skills.
- Ability to understand advanced level texts and scientific articles.

Placement

The graduate with a Master's degree in Mathematics finds employment in the private sector in the following areas:
- Quantitative Analysis in the financial sector
- Risk Management and Risk Advisory
- Information Technology
- Data Science
- Management Consulting
The final exam for the Master's Degree in Mathematics consists of the preparation of a written paper or is divided into the preparation of a written paper and an internship activity.
The paper is written by the student under the guidance of a teacher, on a topic in the field of Mathematics and connected to the courses of the study plan.
The paper must possess original characteristics and demonstrate that the graduate is able to understand advanced level texts and articles, to use with full maturity the knowledge acquired during the course of study and to contribute to the solution of mathematical problems, also using non-curricular knowledge.
Furthermore, the graduate must demonstrate his ability to communicate, in a clear and unambiguous manner, problems, ideas and solutions regarding his paper.
