Course description

The degree course in Optics and Optometry, initially opened according to the directives of law 509/99, follows its spirit with regards to a three-year degree of a highly professional nature which aims to prepare people who wish to enter the world of work. It therefore has a duration of only three years, that is, a master's degree in Optics and Optometry is not foreseen (nor are master's degrees activated in any of the universities where the three-year degree course in Optics and Optometry exists).
The organization of the course in our faculty is still based on mathematical and physical disciplines but equally favors both the more typically applied aspects and the fundamental formal ones.
The degree course in Optics Optometry in fact includes in the first part of the training path a series of courses aimed at providing not only a solid basic education in the mathematical-computer science disciplines (with 20 credits in total), in chemistry, in classical and modern physics, but also adequate training in subjects closely linked to optics and optometry, such as anatomy, histology and human and ocular physio-pathology, all necessary to allow the understanding of the subsequent highly professionalizing courses such as Physical Techniques for Optometry (with (26 credits) and Contact Lenses (which are allocated 16 credits). Particularly relevant is the presence of experimental activities even in courses that are not specifically laboratory-based and very qualifying is the internship activity at industries, health companies and research institutions in the optical/optometric sector, generally aimed at carrying out the final exam and which allows adequate professional preparation for the student, in view of possible employment opportunities in the field of optometry studies, large and small companies operating in optometry, in the USL, in the field of companies that manufacture the most diverse optical instruments related to the world of optometry and vision.
Within the degree course, research activities are conducted consisting in the screening of population groups and in the study of new materials and advanced instrumentation for optometric activities, in collaboration with research institutions, other universities, local authorities.
Ongoing assessments are planned for the improvement of the quality indices relating to the progression of the students' careers, who will benefit from pre-entry courses and assistance from tutors throughout the entire training course.
To be admitted to the degree course, you must have a secondary school diploma or another qualification obtained abroad that is recognized as suitable.
To be admitted to the degree course in Optics and Optometry, students are required to have the following knowledge and skills:
- good command of the Italian language to understand and produce texts and to describe problems;
- ability to use elementary logical structures;
- mathematical knowledge at secondary school level in the fields of Algebra, Euclidean and analytical geometry and Trigonometry.
Possession of the required knowledge is verified by means of a test.
Students who do not answer at least half of the questions correctly will be assigned Additional Training Obligations in SSD MAT/05.
The first ranked students will be admitted to the degree course based on the score obtained in the initial test, until all available places are filled (indicated annually in the course regulations).

Profile

Optician-Optometrist.

Functions

The graduate in Optics and Optometry, once qualified as an Optician, will be able to:
- independently conduct an in-depth optometric examination of the visual system based on advanced instrumentation;
- use the instrumentation necessary to detect ocular parameters;
- evaluate the most suitable technical means for the compensation of visual defects including the possible application of contact lenses.
- provide specialized technical/scientific support in the fields where optical methodologies/instruments are developed and used.

Skills

- solid basic training in mathematics, computer science, classical and modern physics, human and ocular anatomy, physiology and histology, chemistry;
- good mastery of the optical processes characteristic of the visual system;
- knowledge of the investigation methodologies for conducting in-depth optometric examinations;
- technical knowledge for determining the optical means suitable for compensating for the visual defect.

Purpose

The graduate in optics and optometry will be able to work in the professional sector (entrepreneur, freelancer, etc.) and/or commercial (market development, after-sales assistant, etc.).
Possible employment situations:
- optometry studies also linked to small commercial activities;
- industries, commercial activities of contact lenses and eyewear;
- public and private companies for optometric measurements;
- public and private companies for environmental controls in relation to the eyes and vision;
- optometric consultancy activities in the ophthalmology field;
- optometric consultancy in public and private bodies.
The final exam consists of the preparation of a report on a topic chosen by the student and connected to the courses of the study plan. The topic may also consist of the final report of the internship activity carried out at public and private bodies operating in the field of Optics and Optometry, within the scope of specific agreements stipulated with the University.
The final exam does not necessarily have to possess original characteristics, nor a level of depth superior to the level of studies; rather, it must demonstrate the cultural maturity and the capacity of the graduate to personally and autonomously elaborate the topic and his ability to effectively communicate the topic addressed.
