Course description

The Bachelor's Degree in Optics and Optometry is a strongly vocational three-year programme, designed for those wishing to enter the labour market quickly; there is no Master's degree in the discipline. Based on mathematical and physical disciplines, it gives equal weight to applied aspects and to formal foundations.
The first part provides a solid grounding in mathematical and computing disciplines (20 CFU), in chemistry and in classical and modern physics, together with subjects related to optics and optometry such as anatomy, histology and human and ocular physiopathology, needed to tackle the highly vocational courses in Physical Techniques for Optometry (26 CFU) and Contactology (16 CFU).
Experimental work is significant, including in non-laboratory courses, and the traineeship at companies, healthcare bodies and research centres in the optical-optometric sector — normally leading to the final examination — is highly valuable. Career opportunities include optometry practices, sector companies, local health authorities and manufacturers of optical instruments.
The programme carries out research (population screening, study of new materials and instrumentation) in collaboration with research bodies, universities and local authorities. Preparatory pre-courses, tutoring throughout the programme and in-progress assessments are provided.
Admission to the degree requires an upper secondary school diploma or another qualification obtained abroad and recognised as suitable.
For admission to the Optics and Optometry degree, students are required to have the following knowledge and skills:
- a good command of Italian, to understand and produce texts and describe problems;
- the ability to use elementary logical structures;
- mathematical knowledge at secondary school level in Algebra, Euclidean and analytic Geometry and Trigonometry.
The required knowledge is verified through a test.
Students who do not answer at least half of the questions correctly are assigned Additional Learning Requirements (OFA) in the disciplinary field MAT/05.
Applicants are admitted in order of the score obtained in the initial test, up to the number of available places (indicated each year in the programme's Teaching Regulations).
