Course description

The Master's Degree Course in Biomedical Engineering has, as its specific objective, the training of professional figures able to integrate the typical skills of graduates of the biomedical engineering class (LM21) with some typical knowledge of the field of Information, systems for biomedical applications. In detail, these skills will be adequately provided thanks to the integration of knowledge of industrial and information engineering and of a medical-biological nature.
To be admitted to the Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering, it is necessary to have a degree in class L8 or class L9 together with having obtained during the course of study at least 18-CFU in courses in the sectors characterizing Biomedical Engineering (ING-IND/34 and ING-INF/06). The recognition of the foreign qualification occurs in compliance with the regulations and international agreements in force.
To enroll in the Degree Course, passing a test to verify personal preparation is mandatory and is carried out according to the methods indicated in the course's teaching regulations as provided for in the Enrollment Notice.

Profile

Functions

The graduate in Biomedical Engineering is responsible for designing, manufacturing, characterizing and testing, through technical assistance and support, medical devices, systems and equipment intended for the diagnosis, therapy or monitoring of biological functions, as well as biomaterials and devices for applications in regenerative and reconstructive medicine, with particular attention to the study of the relationships between processing, structure, properties and interaction between material and biological tissue.

Skills

The graduate will acquire interdisciplinary skills, both theoretical and operational, which will guarantee mastery in addressing and solving the main problems relating to the design, manufacturing and testing of biomedical industrial devices or processes. In particular, their skills will concern:
• product, process and system design in the biomedical field, also including the issues related to the management of the life cycle of the product or process (from production to distribution to its maintenance) evaluating the specific safety and maintenance issues;
• the functionality and design of new biomedical devices and their production technologies, also through the use of innovative machinery created for the specific function, the consequent experimentation to prove the effectiveness of the design choices, the systems for the production of the new biomedical devices designed and the consequent logistics; the experimental methods and the related experiment design techniques.

Sporto

Graduates in Biomedical Engineering will be able to work in industry, hospitals, healthcare facilities and specialized clinical laboratories, and also in research centers and universities as a technical figure in laboratory contexts. This figure can be employed in the industry that deals with the production, management and testing of biomedical devices and equipment, devices for treatment and rehabilitation, as well as devices for controlled release. Furthermore, the biomedical engineer can be employed in the solution of methodological and technological problems, in the provision of health services and in the use of appropriate medical software for diagnostic assistance. Finally, the graduate in Biomedical Engineering can be employed as an engineer in charge of the technical support of quality, safety and organisation services in the health sector. The graduate in Biomedical Engineering can avail himself of the title of "Bioengineer" after registration in section A of the professional register of the order of engineers which is, in turn, subordinate to passing the appropriate State exam.
The final exam aims to verify the level of maturity and critical ability of the graduate, with reference to the learning and knowledge acquired, to complete the activities provided for by the educational system. The final exam consists of the presentation of a written paper, characterized by a particular originality, which has the purpose of verifying the acquired maturity and ability to present. The final exam constitutes an individual training opportunity to complete the curricular path. The paper proposed for the final exam that refers to a practical-operational experience is written by the student who, during the performance of the assigned work, receives assistance from a teacher (supervisor). The assignment of the supervisor, the methods of discussion of the thesis and the attribution of the grade are regulated by the provisions set out in the Degree Course Teaching Regulations.
