Course description

The Master's Degree in Computer Engineering aims to delve into the various application areas of Computer Engineering. In this context, the following topics are guaranteed to be studied in depth:

- programming in a Unix environment;
- network programming;
- big data;
- internet of things,
- computer security;
- software engineering and cloud environments;
- sequential and parallel algorithms;
- computer networks.

At the end of their studies, graduates of the Master's Degree in Computer Engineering must:
- have in-depth knowledge of the theoretical-scientific aspects of engineering, both in general and in depth with respect to those of computer engineering, in which they are able to identify, formulate and solve, even in an innovative way, complex problems or problems that require an interdisciplinary approach;
- be able to use knowledge of the theoretical-scientific aspects of mathematics to interpret and describe complex engineering problems or problems that require an interdisciplinary approach;
- be able to conceive, plan, design, evaluate, validate and manage complex and/or innovative systems, processes and services;
- be able to design and manage highly complex experiments;
- be equipped with contextual knowledge and transversal skills;
- be able to correctly use disciplinary vocabulary.

Graduates in Computer Engineering will therefore be able to carry out professional activities in computer industries operating in the fields of hardware and software production; in industries for automation and robotics; in companies operating in the area of information services and computer networks; in companies operating in the area of data analysis and applications related to artificial intelligence; in companies providing IT services for the Public Administration.

The effectiveness of the study path is highlighted by the analysis of AlmaLaurea data relating to the entry into the world of work of "master's graduates in Computer Engineering". In fact, the indicator iC07 "Percentage of Graduates employed three years after the Degree (LM; LMCU) - Graduates who declare to carry out a paid work or training activity (e.g. doctorate with scholarship, specialization in medicine, etc.)", in 2022 is equal to 100%, higher than both the regional average (91.6%) and the national average (87%).

To be admitted to the Master's Degree in Computer Engineering, students must meet curricular requirements, technical knowledge requirements and English language knowledge requirements, described in greater detail below.

Candidates must possess a level of knowledge adequate to the general educational objectives of a first level degree course belonging to the class of degrees in Information Engineering (class 9 of Ministerial Decree 509/1999, class L-8 of Ministerial Decree 270/2004) and namely:

-possession of a first level degree or three-year university diploma or second level degree or five-year degree awarded by an Italian university or any other qualification formally recognized as equivalent to the previous ones listed;
-possession of at least 40 university training credits, or equivalent knowledge for students in possession of a foreign qualification, acquired by attending university courses (Bachelor's Degree, Three-year University Diploma, Specialist Degree, Master's Degree, First and Second Level University Master's Degrees) or by attending a university course (Bachelor's Degree, Three-year University Diploma, Specialist Degree, Master's Degree, First and Second Level University Master's Degrees). level) in sectors recognized in the basic training activities in the disciplinary areas of the three-year degrees pertaining to the Information Engineering Class;
- possession of at least 60 university training credits, or equivalent knowledge for students in possession of a foreign qualification, acquired in any university course (Bachelor's Degree, three-year university diploma, Specialist Degree, Master's Degree, first and second level University Master's Degrees) in the scientific-disciplinary sectors indicated for the characterizing training activities of the disciplinary areas of the three-year degrees pertaining to the Information Engineering Class;
- passing an English language proficiency exam or English language certification equal to level B2, or higher, of the CEFR. This requirement is not required for native-speaking students.
- being able to use the Italian language fluently, in written and oral form. This requirement is not required for native-speaking students. In cases where the assessment is not positive, the student will have to acquire 'Further linguistic knowledge' in the Italian language, for example through the courses offered by the School of Italian for Foreigners.

A special Commission will evaluate the personal preparation of students who satisfy the aforementioned curricular requirements, according to the methods described in the Course of Study's Teaching Regulations.

Profile

Computer Engineer

Functions

The Master's Degree Graduate in Computer Engineering carries out his/her professional activity in various fields, such as planning, analysis, design, testing, production, operation, adaptive and perfective evolution in private companies and public bodies that create simple and complex products and services in the ICT sector or that make intensive use of information technologies to support their production processes and work organization.

Skills

In-depth knowledge of the theoretical-scientific aspects of engineering, both in general and in-depth with respect to those of computer engineering, in order to identify, formulate and solve, even in an original way, complex problems or problems that require an interdisciplinary approach. Know the main national and international references in relation to methodologies, techniques, systems and applications to be able to correctly manage the continuous evolution and innovation typical of the sector.

In-depth knowledge of the following theoretical-scientific, methodological and applicative aspects:
- software engineering techniques applied to modern computer systems (also in cloud configuration), mobile applications, databases and information systems;
- modern technologies for computer networks and system programming, including wireless networks and sensor networks;
- the theory and practice of high-performance computing, the concepts underlying parallel algorithms and their application to the creation of complex software systems;
- automation;
- modern decision support systems;
- image processing algorithms and techniques.

Fluent knowledge, in written and oral form, of the English language, in addition to Italian, with reference also to disciplinary lexicons.

Sbocco

Master's graduates in Computer Engineering will be able to carry out project management, analysis, development, integration and system validation activities in the IT industries operating in the hardware and software production sectors; in the automation and robotics industries; in companies operating in the information services and computer networks sector; in IT service companies for private industry, citizens and the Public Administration. Given the wide range of methods, techniques and systems covered by the course of study, these professional opportunities may concern both the local context (the Apulian IT industry) and a broader, national and international context.
The final exam consists of the discussion of a paper that serves to demonstrate the possession of the skills required by the educational objectives assigned to the Degree Course.
The paper proposed for the final exam, characterized by originality, always refers to a significant experience that may concern:
- a project activity;
- an in-depth study of a basic or applied research topic;
- an experimental research activity, carried out in university laboratories or at external institutions.
