The Degree Programme in Social Work provides the skills and knowledge that enable social workers to carry out their activity within the organised system of social resources, in accordance with the principles, competences and methods specific to the profession. The social worker is a profession recognised by Law No. 84 of 23 March 1993: they work with technical-professional and decision-making autonomy in all phases of intervention for the prevention, support and rehabilitation of individuals, families, groups and communities in situations of need or hardship, and may carry out teaching and training activities. The profession may be practised on a self-employed or employed basis.
The social worker promotes the self-determination of citizen-users through the use of personal and social resources, in order to develop their autonomy and responsibility, organising services that meet people's needs and coordinating public and private resources in accordance with social legislation. It is a profession of help to people in need: the social worker is the operational point of reference and activates the individual resources of those who access services.
The provision of services is subject to an assessment of the conditions of need and to specific professional evaluations. The social worker ensures the integration of social and health services and identifies cases of need in the area, arranging the most suitable interventions with the available resources.

Admission to the Social Work degree requires a five-year upper secondary school diploma or a foreign qualification recognised as suitable. Knowledge of the general features of contemporary society is also required, with reference to the Italian case within the European context, together with a knowledge of the basic notions of social legislation, an adequate ability to understand texts and a good level of written and oral expression.
To this end, the faculty offers introductory courses aimed at providing and, at the same time, verifying such knowledge. The organisation of these courses and the way the required knowledge is assessed are set out in the programme's Teaching Regulations.
The Regulations also define the Additional Learning Requirements (OFA) for those who do not possess the minimum knowledge required for admission.
These requirements are cleared through certified attendance of the supplementary courses organised. Failure to attend, or insufficient attendance, results in loss of enrolment.
