Course description

The single-cycle Master's Degree in Medicine and Surgery enriches the physician and surgeon's profile with technological and methodological skills from biomedical engineering. The programme integrates the training activities typical of medical education with those of biomedical biotechnological and engineering education, in order to train a professional able both to practise as a physician and surgeon and to apply and develop technological solutions for the prevention and treatment of diseases, support for ageing and health emergencies.
In the first two years, basic medical sciences prevail alongside the fundamentals of bioengineering; the third year covers preclinical and bioengineering subjects; from the fourth, clinical courses are introduced with engineering applications. From the second year, students move from research laboratories towards clinical practice, with dual tutoring and short placements in Italy and abroad. The thesis applies the acquired skills in a cross-disciplinary way; internationalisation is supported by Erasmus, courses in English and placements abroad.
The final examination counts as the State qualifying examination for the profession, subject to passing the practical-evaluative traineeship. Graduates may continue with doctorates or specialisation schools and may obtain a second degree in Biomedical Engineering (L-9) at the University, with 24 additional bioengineering CFU, a 9-CFU exam and a 3-CFU thesis, through a career-abbreviation procedure.
Admission to the single-cycle Master's Degree in Medicine and Surgery requires an upper secondary school diploma or a foreign qualification recognised as suitable under current legislation.

The required initial knowledge is that provided in the upper secondary school syllabi for biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, as set out in the National Guidelines for Licei and the guidelines for Technical and Vocational Institutes.

The admission procedures for the Master's Degree in Medicine and Surgery, following a 'filter semester', are defined by a specific measure of the Ministry of University and Research, in compliance with current legislation.
