Course description

The programme, a five-year single-cycle degree, qualifies graduates to teach in pre-primary and primary schools, in both State and government-recognised institutions.
The programme is characterised by constant reference to practice and a close relationship between lecturers and students: the workshop-based teaching approach and the organisation into small groups encourage students to put into practice what they have learned and to devise, develop and carry out innovative teaching projects. The placement is an integral part of the study plan and ensures constant engagement with the reality of school life.
The programme aims to build teaching, disciplinary and professional skills for organising teaching and learning activities, with a solid theoretical and methodological framework for understanding the specific features of, and relationships between, the various educational areas (pedagogy, psychology, sociology, Italian, new technologies, physical education, history, geography, scientific and mathematical subjects, subject-specific teaching methods, English).
Through the workshops (simulations, case studies, role-play in the pedagogical, psychological, motor and historical-linguistic fields), future teachers acquire methodological and design tools. The compulsory placement in pre-primary and primary schools, guided by tutor-supervisors, develops organisational and teaching skills in the field; an e-portfolio system supports reflection and accountability.
The programme has capped admission. The number of places and the date, content and procedures of the selection test are determined each year by Ministerial Decree.
Admission requires an upper secondary school diploma or a foreign qualification valid for access to university education and recognised as suitable under current legislation.
General cultural knowledge of a pedagogical, philosophical, psychological and sociological nature is also required, together with verbal, logical and analytical skills. The required knowledge is assessed through multiple-choice questionnaires designed to verify the knowledge, skills and abilities indicated above. Where the assessment is not passed, the programme's Teaching Council assigns Additional Learning Requirements.
