The course describes the long-term evolution of tourism and investigates the main factors influencing the birth, development, and decline of vacation types, with particular reference to cultural, technological, and organizational transformations that have occurred since the 15th century. Moreover, the relationships between the tourism phenomenon and the economic/political context where national and supranational actors operate are explored as well as the main theories explaining the power relations underlying the global tourism industry.
The course focuses on different tourism typologies to understand the economic, social and cultural impact of the tourism industry in its historical/geographical context
Expected results according to Dublin descriptors:
Knowledge and understanding:
Students will recognize the main factors influencing tourism supply and demand and will understand the tourism phenomenon from an economic, social and cultural perspective. They will also be able to comprehend the evolution of tourists’ expectations over time
Applying knowledge and understanding:
The knowledge learned will allow students to understand the tourism industry as a driver for economic, social and cultural development in order to build a sustainable tourism product as well as to provide the most appropriate response to tourists’ expectations.
Making judgments:
Students will be able to grasp the impact of cultural, economic, technological, and organizational transformations on the tourism industry over time. Furthermore, placing tourism within the context of global historical dynamics, they will understand it as a tool for propaganda purposes, cultural diplomacy or simply as a driver for economic development.
Communication skills:
The knowledge learned during the course will allow students to competently draft reports and opinions on tourism issues in both historical and contemporary terms.
Learning skills:
The course aims to develop and refine students' critical analysis and evaluation skills regarding the tourism phenomenon and its historical evolution.
