Course description
The programme has a common first year and, in the second year, four tracks: Agri-food; Bio-health; Cellular and Molecular; and Human Nutrition. The qualification requires at least 120 CFU, of which 24 for the final examination (an experimental dissertation carried out at university facilities, research bodies or companies, in Italy or abroad). Location: Ecotekne Campus (Lecce).
International mobility is supported by Erasmus+ scholarships and agreements with European universities. Graduates can develop basic and applied research in the agri-food, bio-health, cellular/molecular and human-nutrition fields, through genetic, biochemical, molecular, cytological, morphological and microbiological investigations; they can sit the State examination and register with the professional body, work in public and private laboratories or as freelancers, and access specialisation schools, doctorates and master's courses, as well as, with the requirements of Ministerial Decree 616/2017, the competitions for teaching Science.
The profession of biologist is regulated (Law 396/67) and requires registration with the National Board of Biologists.
For graduates of other classes (or with equivalent foreign qualifications with at least partially similar content), a minimum number of CFU is required in the following groups of basic fields: FIS (FIS/01-08) 6 CFU; INF/01 or ING-INF/05 3 CFU; MAT (MAT/01-09) 6 CFU; CHIM (CHIM/01-03, CHIM/06) 12 CFU.
For the BIO/ and MED/ fields, in line with the recommendations of the Board of Italian University Biologists, the candidate must have at least 60 CFU distributed across 9 of the 10 groups (at least 6 CFU each): 1) BIO/01-02-03; 2) BIO/04; 3) BIO/05-07; 4) BIO/06-13; 5) BIO/09; 6) BIO/10; 7) BIO/11; 8) BIO/18; 9) BIO/19; 10) MED/04-42.
Any gaps may be filled before admission through single courses. Admission involves an interview with a dedicated Committee to verify the requirements and the candidate's preparation; a good knowledge of English (at least level B1) is also required, assessed during the interview.
