Course description

The Master's Degree in Modern Languages, Literatures and Translation trains graduates able to: carry out translation, editing and revision of texts at public and private institutions; work in the various fields requiring translation skills, at local, national, European and international bodies; teach foreign languages or Italian as a second language (L2) in private institutions and, once the legal requirements are met, in Italian schools; and continue their studies in doctoral and specialisation programmes.
Graduates acquire an in-depth knowledge of the languages, literatures and cultures of two European languages (chosen from English, French, Spanish and German) and of Italian L2, a humanistic education with skills in literary translation and in rendering its aesthetic, historical and cultural values, knowledge of the mechanisms of linguistic comparison and an awareness of differences in register and usage.
With a view to internationalisation, the programme offers a double degree with the Universität des Saarlandes (Saarbrücken, Germany): the first year at the home university and the second at the partner, with full recognition of credits. On completion, students obtain both the Master's Degree (LM-37) from the University of Salento and the Master in Romanistik-Italienisch with Nebenfach Europäische Kulturstudien from Saarland.
The programme is organised into three tracks, chosen at enrolment: Traditional; DIL2; and the Unisalento-Saarland DIL2 double degree (Germany).
Admission to the Master's Degree in Modern Languages, Literatures and Translation is open to holders of a Bachelor's or Master's degree (Ministerial Decree 270/04), of a Bachelor's or Specialist degree in the equivalent classes of the Ministerial Decree 509/99 system, of a four-year degree (systems predating Ministerial Decree 509/99) or of another qualification obtained in Italy or abroad and recognised as suitable, provided they have acquired at least 14 CFU in university literary-area exams, in the disciplinary fields HELL-01/B (formerly L-FIL-LET/02), LATI-01/A, FICP-01/B, FLMR-01/A, ITAL-01/A, LICO-01/A, COMP-01/A or FRAN-01/A, SPAN-01/A, SPAN-01/B, FLMR-01/C, ANGL-01/A, ANGL-01/B, GERM-01/B; and at least 14 CFU chosen among FRAN-01/B, SPAN-01/C, ANGL-01/C and GERM-01/C (language, translation and linguistics) or a language certification at least at level B2 in each of the two foreign languages studied. International students are additionally required to have level B2 in Italian.
