Italian language proficiency test - Notice for international students applying for the 2024/2025 academic year

In order to facilitate the procedures for issuing study visas, the University of Salento has decided to organise an early Italian language proficiency test.

The test will be held online on a Microsoft Teams platform.

Only students who have already pre-registered for Unisalento study courses (taught in Italian) on the Universitaly website will be able to take part.

The early test of Italian language proficiency is therefore set for:

- Monday 10 June 2024 at 11 a.m. Italian time.

Those entitled will be contacted by the Unisalento Welcome Office with the link to the online meeting on Microsoft Teams.

The next test of knowledge of the Italian language will be scheduled in early September 2024, on a date to be defined.

Information on the required language level

As set out in the ‘Procedures for Entry, Residency and Enrolment of International Students and the Respective Recognition of Qualifications for Higher Education Courses in Italy’, every year the University of Salento also organises tests of knowledge of the Italian language, identifying the level required, which is at least B2.
This assessment of competence is compulsory for all degree courses and single-cycle degree courses, with the exception of the cases of exemption indicated below.

Those who have not passed the language test cannot be admitted to further competitive or aptitude tests - if any.

As far as Master's degree courses are concerned, autonomous decisions by the universities define the level and methods for testing knowledge of the Italian or foreign language of the course.

Cases of exemption from the Italian language test, but still subject to the limit of the respective quotas of reserved places

Students exempted from the Italian language test, but still subject to the limit of the respective quotas of places reserved for citizens applying for visas and residing abroad, are those who have obtained certificates of proficiency in Italian at a level no lower than level B2 of the Council of Europe, issued within the CLIQ (Certificazione Lingua Italiana di Qualità) quality system, which brings together in
association of the current certifying bodies (University for Foreigners of Perugia, University for Foreigners of Siena, Roma Tre University, Società ‘Dante Alighieri’), as well as issued by the University for Foreigners ‘Dante Alighieri’ of Reggio Calabria, also in agreement with Italian Cultural Institutes abroad or other accredited bodies. These certifications may be obtained in the country of origin, in affiliated examination venues
present throughout the world.

Cases of exemption from the Italian language test, regardless of the number of places reserved

For enrolment on first-level degree courses and single-cycle courses, the following are exempt from the language test, regardless of the number of places reserved:
a) students in possession of a five-year or four-year secondary school diploma obtained at Italian state and paritarian schools abroad;
b) students in possession of one of the final secondary school qualifications listed in Attachment 2;
c) the holders of complementary certificates to the final secondary school qualification obtained in Argentina, attesting the attendance of a course of studies including the teaching, for at least 5 years, of the Italian language, pursuant to Law no. 210 of 7.6.1999 (G.U. no. 152 of 1.7.1999);
d) students who have obtained a Diploma in Italian Language and Culture from the Universities for Foreigners of Perugia and Siena;
e) students who have obtained certificates of competence in Italian language, at a level corresponding to levels C1 and C2 of the Council of Europe, issued within the CLIQ (Italian Language Quality Certification) quality system, which brings together in association the current certifying bodies (University for Foreigners of Perugia, University for Foreigners of Siena, Roma Tre University, Dante Alighieri Society), as well as issued by the University for Foreigners ‘Dante Alighieri’ of Reggio Calabria, also in agreement with the Italian Cultural Institutes abroad or other accredited bodies.

For enrolment in second-level degree courses or other courses of study, students in possession of the qualifications indicated in points d), e) above are exempt from the language proficiency test established independently by the University.
