The Master's Degree in Art History trains professionals specialised in the history, conservation and protection of the visual arts and of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Graduates acquire a solid historical and philological grounding geared towards research, teaching and heritage education, with an in-depth knowledge of the chronological development of architecture, sculpture, painting and applied arts in Europe from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age, and are able to recognise and convey their cultural significance. Alongside their historical training, they may develop skills in protection, conservation and restoration.
The programme leads to the professional qualification of Art Historian (Article 2 of Law No. 110 of 22 July 2014) and offers options for teacher training (anthropology, psychology, pedagogy), for the economics and management of cultural heritage, and integrative subjects such as geography and cultural-heritage legislation.
The Master's degree gives access to master's courses and doctoral schools, to the competitions for teaching Art History (and, with supplementary exams, to other teaching classes) and to competitions for inspectorate and managerial roles at the Ministry of Culture. It also provides skills useful for entering other fields (publishing, communication, information management and dissemination through new media and social networks).

Admission to class LM-89 is open to students holding a degree in Cultural Heritage (L-1) or Humanities (L-10). Graduates from other classes, or holders of a four-year degree or a first-level academic diploma from the AFAM higher arts and music education system (Law 508/1999), may also be admitted, provided they have acquired at least 54 CFU in the following disciplinary fields, of which:
- at least 24 CFU in L-ART/01, L-ART/02, L-ART/03, L-ART/04, L-ART/05, L-ART/06, L-ART/07;
- at least 30 CFU in L-FIL-LET/04, L-FIL-LET/10, L-FIL-LET/11, L-LIN/01, M-STO/01, M-STO/02, M-STO/04, M-FIL/04, M-FIL/06, M-GGR/01, M-GGR/02, L-ANT/02, L-ANT/03, L-ANT/04, L-ANT/07, L-ANT/09, L-ANT/10, IUS/08, IUS/09, FIS/07, CHIM/01, CHIM/02, SPS/07, SPS/08.
Students must be able to express themselves fluently, in written and oral form, in a European Union language, including its disciplinary vocabulary; IT skills applicable to cultural heritage are also assessed. An assessment of each candidate's preparation is provided, in the ways set out in the Teaching Regulations. No Additional Learning Requirements are envisaged at admission.
