"Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations II covers the period from Late Hellenism to ca. 500 CE, offering a coherent narrative of the major civilizations that succeeded and interacted with one another over this long span. After establishing the chronological framework and the main periodizations in use, the course outlines the key social, political and cultural features of these civilizations as they developed over time. Particular attention is given to the events and processes that mark essential reference points and turning points in the history of the ancient Mediterranean.
The course also examines literary and documentary sources for these periods and phenomena, showing what each contributes to our understanding of the subject."

Lectures and seminars supported by PowerPoint presentations, together with individual and group exercises.
The module is taught in a four-week block format (two weeks of preparation followed by two weeks of lectures). A detailed schedule covering both phases will be made available.

The course examines a selection of translated texts in Greek, Latin, Semitic and Iranian languages, studied in their context.

Communication skills are strengthened through the study of ethe sources in their historical context.

Students acquire and refine skills in critical reading, analysis and independent study, laying the foundations of a solid intellectual and cultural formation

Students will gain a clear, if general, understanding of the history of the Mediterranean region from the second millennium BC to the first centuries AD.
They will be able to understand and apply the chronological divisions established by modern scholarship and to arrange the civilizations studied in chronological sequence.
They will be familiar with the main social, political and cultural processes, and with the key dated events, that shaped the history of the ancient Mediterranean.
They will also be able to interpret the textual and material sources that document these processes.

A final written examination will assess students' grasp of the foundational material covered in the preparatory phase (chronologies), as well as their knowledge of the course content and of the assigned readings.
