Course description

The course of study in History of Art aims to train professionals who are experts in the history, conservation and protection of the visual arts and of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Graduates in History of Art must have a solid historical and philological education aimed at research, teaching and education on cultural heritage. They will have an in-depth knowledge of the chronological development of architecture, sculpture, painting and applied arts of the European continent, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age. They will be able to recognize and transmit the cultural values and the dimension of testimonies of civilization of this heritage. They will be able to combine historical education with skills related to the problems of protection, conservation and restoration. The curriculum of studies will allow them to acquire the necessary training required for the professional qualification of Art Historian, defined in the specific profile, pursuant to the law that established the national lists of professionals of Cultural Heritage recognized by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism (art. 2 of the law of 22 July 2014, n. 110), now Ministry of Culture.
The training path of the master's degree includes some options that allow you to follow, in addition to the specific teachings of history and criticism of the arts, also the disciplines useful for the training of future teachers (anthropology, psychology, pedagogy), relating to the economy and management of cultural heritage, and integrative disciplines such as geography and legislation on cultural heritage.
The master's degree obtained with this course provides students with the knowledge necessary to access further levels in the field of specialized studies of the discipline (master's, doctoral school), access to competitions for teaching Art History in high schools and, integrated with the appropriate exams, also to other competition classes of literary subjects. It also allows participation in competitions for inspection and management roles in public administration, specifically in the central and peripheral offices of the Ministry of Culture. More general skills and abilities are also offered that allow entry into other sectors of the world of work (in the field of publishing, communication and management of information and dissemination through new media and social networks).
Access to LM-89 is permitted to students with a degree in Cultural Heritage (L-1) or in Literature (L-10). Graduates from other degree classes, or with a four-year degree or a first-level academic diploma issued by institutions belonging to the system of higher education and specialization in art and music referred to in article 2, paragraph 1, of law 21 December 1999, n. 508, pursuant to article 1 paragraph 102 of law 288/2012, provided that they have acquired at least 54 CFU in the following scientific-disciplinary sectors, of which:
§ at least 24 credits in the following sectors: L-ART/01, L-ART/02, L-ART/03, L-ART/04, L-ART/05, L-ART/06, L-ART/07;
§ at least 30 in the following additional sectors: L-FIL-LET/04, L- FIL-LET 10, L-FIL-LET/11, L-LIN/01, M-STO/01, M-STO/02, M-STO/04, M-FIL/04, M-FIL/06, M-GGR/01, MGGR/02, L-ANT/02, LANT/03, L-ANT/04, L-ANT/07, L-ANT/09, L-ANT/10, IUS/08; IUS/09, FIS/07, CHIM/01, CHIM/02, SPS/07, SPS/08.
Students must be able to express themselves fluently in a foreign language of the European Union both in written and oral form, with reference also to disciplinary lexicons; IT knowledge applicable to cultural heritage will also be assessed. Regardless of the curricular requirements, all students are required to verify their personal preparation, with methods defined in the teaching regulations. There are no educational debts, or additional educational obligations, at the time of access

The graduate in “Art History”:

-Develops procedures for the recognition, attribution, dating, evaluation of artistic artefacts;
-Identifies methods, sources, tools for the study, protection, restoration, evaluation of artistic artefacts
-Collaborate with restorers, diagnosticians of cultural heritage, directors of cultural institutions, cultural companies, media managers, managers and directors of specialized magazines, auction houses, travel agencies; administrative managers at local and national level in the sectors of culture and tourism.

Skills

The graduate in the master's degree:
• knows how to use historical sources, paper and digital archives, autoptic analysis tools, iconographic and stylistic recognition methods of artistic artefacts
• is able to operate in the field of scientific research on the history of art at universities and research institutes, in museums, superintendencies, local authorities, in the media and on the web, in the cultural tourism sector.
• is able to: recognise the cultural scope, chronology, iconography, cultural value of artistic artefacts; evaluate the state of conservation of works; recognise priorities in protection and restoration interventions; disseminate historical-artistic knowledge, develop historical-artistic itineraries also for tourism purposes; set up teaching modules for teaching art history in educational institutions, museums and places of culture
• is able to: prepare scientific and informative sheets, catalogue sheets on artistic artefacts; propose and plan activities of safeguarding, protection, restoration; transmit knowledge of topics and themes related to art history; propose and plan historical-artistic itineraries for educational and tourist purposes;

The final exam consists of the discussion of a dissertation written in an original way by the student, both in Italian and in a language of the European Community, under the guidance of a supervisor, regarding a subject of the degree course. The final grade is expressed in hundredths and the commission, in assigning it, will take into account the overall curriculum of the candidate, the quality of the paper, the progress of the discussion and any other element that may contribute to the evaluation. The proposal for honors must be unanimously accepted by the commission.
