Course description

The Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences (Class L-13) trains the Junior Biologist, providing preparation that leads on to a Master's Degree.
Biology studies living organisms in their various aspects (structure, organisation, function, growth, reproduction, evolution, distribution) in order to understand the origins and rules of life. Following the '3+2' structure, the programme combines tradition and innovation with a strongly multidisciplinary character: preparatory subjects such as Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics provide the cultural foundations and tools for studying the core and characterising biological subjects. The structure allows for personalised study paths while ensuring a sound cross-disciplinary scientific preparation.
The first-cycle degree provides the fundamental knowledge for a professional career in every branch of the Life Sciences.
Student mobility and internationalisation are supported through scholarships and agreements with numerous European universities for courses and traineeships abroad.
The main career opportunities lie in the biomedical, industrial, veterinary, agri-food and manufacturing sectors, including public and private research and service bodies: analysis, monitoring, management and prevention; identification, enhancement and sustainable use of biological resources; conservation of biodiversity, the environment and human health.
Restricted admission: 200 places. Location: Ecotekne Campus (via Monteroni, Lecce).
Admission to the Biological Sciences programme requires a five-year upper secondary school diploma, or one obtained through experimental four-year programmes (Ministerial Decree No. 567 of 3 August 2017), or another qualification obtained abroad and recognised as suitable.

Prospective students should have a good grasp of the fundamentals of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, based on upper secondary school syllabi.

Admission is subject to passing a selective test, the procedures and features of which are set out in a specific Admission Call published on the Department website: https://www.disteba.unisalento.it.

The test consists of multiple-choice questions with a single correct answer. Where the assessment is not passed, specific Additional Learning Requirements (OFA) may be assigned in the disciplinary fields CHIM/03, MAT/*, BIO/05, FIS/*. OFA are assigned on the basis of each disciplinary field and only where the percentage of correct answers in that field is below 40%. The criteria for assigning and clearing any OFA are governed by the programme's Teaching Regulations.
