Course description

The Degree in Physics at the University of Salento trains graduates with a solid grounding and command of the scientific method in the fundamental areas of Physics, acquiring methodological, experimental and theoretical skills that can be developed further in subsequent cycles. The rapid renewal of technologies and the fragmentation of the labour market make basic education the priority, developing an open and flexible mindset able to adapt to change; first-cycle graduates can thus access work requiring familiarity with scientific culture and method.
The basic activities in General Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Computer Science are allotted more credits than the class requires. The characterising activities cover three areas: 1) experimental and applied, with laboratory measurements and data processing in various fields of classical and modern Physics and in electronics; 2) theoretical and foundational, with Special Relativity, Statistical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics and Mathematical Methods of Physics; 3) microphysics and the structure of matter, with the theoretical-phenomenological foundations of Nuclear and Particle, Atomic, Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics.
The knowledge acquired is further developed through integrative and interdisciplinary activities.
Admission to the degree requires an upper secondary school diploma or another qualification obtained abroad and recognised as suitable.
For admission to the Physics degree, students are required to have the following knowledge and skills:
- a good command of Italian, to understand and produce texts and describe problems;
- the ability to use elementary logical structures;
- mathematical knowledge at secondary school level in Algebra, Euclidean and analytic Geometry and Trigonometry.
The required knowledge is verified through a set of multiple-choice questions.
Students who do not answer at least half of the questions correctly are assigned Additional Learning Requirements (OFA) in the disciplinary field MAT/05, according to the procedures set out in the programme's Teaching Regulations.
