Course overview/Course outline

This three-year course provides interdisciplinary training, preparing sociologists to be employed in social research, in the planning and management of social policies, particularly those addressing social exclusion and marginalization. Two alternative curricula are offered: the "Professional and Didactics of Human Sciences" curriculum and the "Crime and Deviance" curriculum. The latter focused in particular on the sociological study of marginalization processes, as well as on the legal and psychological aspects of crime. Both curricula provides the fundamentals of sociology, of the methodology of social research, of statistics, as well as the bases of historical, anthropological, legal and economic knowledge, aiming at the development of multidiciplinary competences for understanding social phenomena.

Access to the programme

This is an open access degree program. Students are admitted on the basis of an initial preparation assessment test. The admission test tends to ascertain the possession of the knowledge necessary for access, with reference to the upper secondary school programs, as well as the basic culture of the candidate, in relation to the qualifying objectives of the degree course and the expected training path. The admission test consists of an online multiple choice test (30 questions) with 4 answers, 1 of which is correct, to be carried out after enrollment electronically, using the same login and password as the student and which the student uses to access to the students.unisalento.it portal The additional training obligations relate to issues of general knowledge. Additional training obligations must necessarily be made up within the first year of the course, otherwise there will be a temporary blocking of the possibility of booking for the second year exams.

Admission Requirements

Students are required to possess an appropriate study method, basic knowledge relating to the development of contemporary society, as well as fundamental notions relating to the structure of the State, citizenship, and emerging social problems. The Degree Course annually organizes remedial courses aimed at filling any gaps in the requisites necessary for access.

Career opportunities

Professional opportunities envisaged by the degree course are: social research activities, activities related to social integration to contrast phenomena of deviance and marginalization, operators in public and private administrations, with particular attention to the planning of public policies. Furthermore, graduates in Sociology can perform the function of social sciences technician in charge of the collection, conservation and transmission of documentation; in charge of studies, research and statistical services.

Final exams and graduation

The final exam consists in the evaluation of a paper (about 40 pages), prepared by the student under the supervision of a teacher. The commitment required on the part of the learner is proportional to the number of credits assigned to the test. Critical ability, propensity for research, autonomy of judgment, argumentative ability will be evaluated for the final judgment. The thesis is evaluated by a specially appointed Commission. There is no public discussion. The didactic coordination of the Department of History, Society and Human Studies, however, organizes a public proclamation ceremony for graduates.
