The degree in Physics of the University of Salento has as its objective the training of graduates, who possess a solid basic preparation and mastery of the scientific method in the fundamental areas of Physics, assuming methodological, experimental and theoretical skills, susceptible of further study in subsequent cycles . The characterising activities are carried out in the areas:
- Experimental and applicative, which includes laboratory measurements, with data processing, in various fields of physics, classical and modern, and in the electronic field;
- Theoretical and fundamentals of Physics, including activities in Special Relativity, Statistical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics and Mathematical Methods of Physics;
- Microphysics and the Structure of Matter, in which the theoretical-phenomenological foundations of Nuclear and Particle, Atomic, Molecular and Condensed State Physics will be provided.
The knowledge provided will be the subject of further study and integration, within the framework of integrative activities and interdisciplinary training.
Enrolment in the Bachelor's Degree Course in Physics is open to access, but requires the compulsory verification of initial preparation, according to the terms and procedures specified in the call for the test for verification of initial preparation. The possession of the required knowledge is verified through the administration of a series of multiple choice questions. The test consists of an online multiple choice test of 25 questions with the option of n. 4 answers of which 1 correct. The maximum duration of the test is 75 minutes.
Number of places reserved for international students (extra U.E.): n. 10 places
To be admitted it is necessary to have one of the following qualifications:
- High school diploma;
- Diploma of the Magistral Institutes and Artistic High Schools: in this case it is necessary to have successfully attended an integrative course (failing this, the University may define an additional educational obligation corresponding to the minor knowledge resulting from the attendance of the supplementary year) ;
- qualification obtained abroad declared equivalent to an Italian upper secondary education diploma;
- I, II level degree or university degree according to the didactic regulations prior to the D.M. 509/99.
In order to access the degree course in Physics, the student is required to possess the following knowledge and skills:
- ability of the Italian language to understand and produce texts and to describe problems;
- ability to use elementary logical structures;
- mathematical knowledge at secondary school level in the fields of Algebra, Euclidean and analytical geometry and Trigonometry.
Graduates in Physics can carry out professional activities in the areas of technological applications of physics at industrial level, laboratory activities and services in all areas, including non-scientific ones, in which the ability to analyze and model even complex phenomena with scientific methodology is required. The Physicist performs the following functions:
- modeling and problem solving in science;
- design and production of instrumentation and didactic material for different applications;
- conducting, organizing and planning laboratory measurements;
- management and design of technological applications at industrial level;
- research, control of industrial processes and analysis in public and private companies.
The final exam consists in the preparation of a report on a topic chosen by the student and connected with the courses of the study plan, or in the report on an experiment specifically carried out, in the context of the experimental knowledge already acquired.
The final exam does not necessarily have to have original characteristics, nor a degree of in-depth study beyond the level of studies; it must rather emerge from the cultural maturity and the ability of the student to elaborate personally and independently of the topic and his ability to effectively communicate the topic addressed.
