The degree course in Optics and Optometry, lasts only three years, i.e. there is no master's degree in Optics and Optometry (nor are master's degrees activated in any of the universities where the three-year degree course in Optics and Optometry exists).
The organisation of the course in our faculty is still based on mathematical and physical disciplines but it privileges in equal measure both the more typically applicative aspects and the fundamental formal ones.
The degree course in Optics Optometry in fact provides in the first part of the training course a series of courses aimed at providing not only a solid basic training in the mathematical-computer disciplines (with a total of 20 credits), in chemistry, in classical and modern physics, but also adequate training in subjects strictly related to optics and optometry, such as anatomy, histology and human and ocular physio-pathology, all necessary to allow the understanding of subsequent highly professionalizing courses such as Physical Techniques for Optometry (with 26 credits) and Contactology (which are reserved 16 credits). Particularly relevant is the presence of experimental activity also in the courses not specifically laboratory and very qualifying and the activity of internship in industries, health companies and research bodies in the optical / optometric sector, generally aimed at carrying out the test final and which allows an adequate professional preparation to the student, in view of possible employment opportunities in the field of optometry studies, of large and small companies that operate in optometry, in the context of the companies that manufacture the most disparate optical instruments related to the world of Optometry and vision.
Enrollment in the Bachelor's Degree Course in Optics and Optometry is open to access, but requires the compulsory verification of initial preparation, according to the terms and procedures specified in the call for the test for verification of initial preparation. The possession of the required knowledge is verified through the administration of a series of multiple choice questions. The test consists of an online multiple choice test of 25 questions with the option of n. 4 answers of which 1 correct. The maximum duration of the test is 75 minutes.
Number of places reserved for international students (extra U.E.): n. 10 places
To be admitted it is necessary to have one of the following qualifications:
- High school diploma;
- Diploma of the Magistral Institutes and Artistic High Schools: in this case it is necessary to have successfully attended an integrative course (failing this, the University may define an additional educational obligation corresponding to the minor knowledge resulting from the attendance of the supplementary year);
- qualification obtained abroad declared equivalent to an Italian upper secondary education diploma;
- I, II level degree or university degree according to the didactic regulations prior to the D.M. 509/99.
In order to access the degree course in Physics, the student is required to possess the following knowledge and skills:
- ability of the Italian language to understand and produce texts and to describe problems;
- ability to use elementary logical structures;
- mathematical knowledge at secondary school level in the fields of Algebra, Euclidean and analytical geometry and Trigonometry.
Graduates in optics and optometry will be able to carry out activities in the professional (entrepreneur, freelance, etc.) and / or commercial sector (market development, after-sales assistant, etc.). Possible opportunities:
- optometry studies also linked to small businesses;
- industries, commercial activities of contact lenses and eyewear;
- public and private companies for optometric measurements;
- public and private companies for environmental checks in relation to eyes and vision;
- optometric consultancy in the ophthalmology field;
- optometric consultancy in public and private bodies.
The final exam consists in the preparation of a report on a topic chosen by the student and connected with the courses of the study plan, or in the report on an experiment specifically carried out, in the context of the experimental knowledge already acquired.
The final exam does not necessarily have to have original characteristics, nor a degree of in-depth study beyond the level of studies; it must rather emerge from the cultural maturity and the ability of the student to elaborate personally and independently of the topic and his ability to effectively communicate the topic addressed.
