Modern Languages and Translation is a postgraduate programme (master degree) designed to allow those who have a high level of attainment in a foreign language (French, English, German, Spanish), and have studied literature to a 1st-degree level and would undertake more advanced work. Graduates in Modern Languages and Translation will have excellent competence in two modern foreign languages and cultures, with full awareness of text types between them and Italian, and also advanced knowledge of theoretical tools and application strategies for linguistic analysis. As well as receiving practical and in-depth language tuition, students will be supplied with selected skills in the fields of translation studies, sociology, psychology and anthropology to complete their critical and research knowledge. The programme is also targeted at future teacher trainees.

To enrol in this second-cycle degree programme, applicants must hold a first-cycle qualification in the same or related subject area, with extra ECTS if required competences are lacking. Candidates will also need to meet specific admission requirements (18 ECTS in each of two foreign languages they select and 16 ECTS in Linguistics/Literatures) and demonstrate adequate general knowledge. Applicants’ general knowledge of the foreign languages and Italian language will be verified during the admission interview. The final dissertation (15 ECTS), consists of a written scientific text of about 120 pages, undertaken by all students on the Masters’ Degree. It is designed to deepen further subject knowledge, to provide a broader range of opportunities to apply relevant research methodologies, and to hone critical evaluation and language skills on a topic, on an aspect of the modern languages and cultures offered by the course. The topic will be agreed with the dissertation supervisor from the range of areas described above for the core modules. Students will be expected to put into practice theories, strategies, methods and techniques with which they will have become acquainted while studying the relevant preparatory modules.
