The Biological Sciences course features teachings centered on the study of living beings under different aspects including structure, organization, function, growth, reproduction, evolution, distribution of living organisms, the origins and rules of life. Biology, in short, studies the fundamental elements of Nature. Due to its current and constantly evolving content, the curriculum of studies, combining tradition and innovation, is the result of a modern and integrated approach to biology. The course in Biological Sciences is characterized by this transversal approach. The fundamental training activities include preparatory disciplines, such as Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics, and provide the cultural substrate and the tools to develop both basic and characterizing biological subjects. The disciplines included characterizing activities or related and integrative activities, representative of key cultural areas of modern Biology. The course also includes external activities (internships in companies, public administration structures and laboratories, and / or internships at Italian and foreign universities).
Knowledge required for access: basic knowledge of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology based on the programs of the High School. Methods of verifying the possession of such knowledge: Multiple choice selective test, of which only one is correct. Criteria for the assignment of specific additional training obligations: The Scientific-Disciplinary Sectors (SSD) in which Additional Educational Obligations (Italian acronym=OFA) may be assigned are CHIM / 03, MAT / *, FIS / *. OFA will be assigned based on the following criterion: the percentage of correct answers totaled in the SSDs corresponding to the subjects of the test.
Access to the Degree Course in Biological Sciences has a limited number of students. For enrollment in the first year, 200 places are available, of which 10 are reserved for non-EU students. Candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent foreign qualification may be admitted to the three-year degree course in Biological Sciences. The knowledge required in relation to the preparation necessary to take the entrance test is clearly stated on the site: https://bit.ly/CISIAONLINE. For the academic year 2020/2021, the bachelor course in Biological Sciences has scheduled access to guarantee the quality of the educational offer in relation to the resources available and requires having taken a TOLC test (CISIA On-Line Test) as a mandatory requirement and with a selective value for access. The test will be delivered in online mode (TOLC @ CASA) http://www.scienzemfn.unisalento.it/c/document_library/get_file?uuid=c416b99a-a2b6-45a6-acf3-3cbba6445170&groupId=834089
The main objective of the Course of Studies in Biological Sciences is to provide students with the necessary methodologies and basic knowledge that can be used for access to subsequent master courses, however not precluding any direct access to the job market as a junior biologist (qualification acquired in Italy through post-lauream exam). Employment opportunities are as follows: - Biologists and similar professions - Biochemists - Botanists - Zoologists - Ecologists - Biochemical laboratory technicians - Food product technicians
The final exam consists in the presentation of a thesis work prepared by the student with the guidance of a supervisor, related to an experiment carried out by the student, as part of the experimental knowledge acquired. The final exam does not necessarily have to have originality characteristics, nor a degree of in-depth study above the level of studies; rather, it will highlight the cultural maturity and the ability of the student to elaborate the subject individually and independently, and his ability to effectively communicate the topic addressed. The graduation grade is expressed in one hundred-tenths with possible honors.
