Course overview/Course outline

English is obligatory with 7 exams: 3 Language, 3 translation and 1 Theory of Translation. 2nd and 3rd languages both have 3 language and translation exams 2nd language choice is between French, Spanish Russian, Chinese Turkish and Hebrew 3rd language is between German, Portuguese/Brazilian, Arabic, Japanese and Albanian. The final language level will depend on the language chosen. In general expected levels will be B2/C1 for the main European languages, and between A2 and B1 for the other languages. Plus an extra language and translation exam in 1 of the following: French, Spanish, Russian, German or English. All the languages also have mother-tongue teacher courses for the full 3 years Other exams include foreign literature, Italian language, Italian literature, Semiotics, General Linguistics, History, IT and an internship

Access to the programme

Limited entry by written multiple-choice exam, which tests English, Italian (grammar and style) as well as Italian-English-Italian translation, knowledge of Geography and History. Maximum 150 places including 15 places for non-EU students. Exceptionally for the year 2020 the test was based on school results. Check on the website for updates.

Admission Requirements

Prerequisites for the entrance exam are secondary school certification or equivalent. Students will be tested at a B2 level for English, and C2 level for Italian. Non-Italian students will be tested with an oral exam and will be expected to have a minimum of a B2 level. Students may enter the course even if their level is not fully at the levels expected if there are still places available. In this case they will have to pass an “OFA” exam in their area(s) of weakness within the 1st year. For further information see the admission test regulations (bando).

Career opportunities

Graduates will either continue to specialise following the Master’s course in Translation and Interpretation or will start careers in any profession requiring specific language competence, such as: - tourism (guiding, travel agency, hotel reception) - conference, events (organiser, translator/interpreter) - company (import/export, human relations, in-house translator) - community interpreting/translating - editorial/publishing (proof-reading)

Final exams and graduation

Students write a thesis, which may be written in the language of their choice (after consultation with their supervisor), but will always have a 1 page abstract in Italian. The student may choose their supervisor from within the course, and the subject of the thesis itself may cover any subject that is clearly linked with the study or work experience within the curriculum. The expected length is 25-30 pages (2000 characters/page), but may vary according to the content and the language.
