Inter-Asia - Department of Mathematics and Physics

Three Pakistani students have been selected and they were granted a fellowship of about 4 months for an internship in the laboratories of the Dipartimento di Matematica e Fisica “Ennio De Giorgi”.

The students, according to their requests and interests, were directed to different laboratories.

The student Noraiz Tahir carried out his traineeship at the Astrophysics Laboratory under the supervision of Prof. Francesco De Paolis; the students Tayyaba Batool and Muhammad Rizwan Aziz carried out their respective internships under the supervision of Prof. Maurizio Martino at the research laboratories of the CNR Nanotec (Tayyaba Batool) of Dr. Loretta Del Mercato and at the Laser Nano Lab (Muhammad Rizwan Aziz) of Prof. Martino.

Activities and results carried out within the Inter-Asia Project

All three students’ achievements, from all points of view, were very positive and they reported the following evaluations:

Tayyaba Batool  (from the 2nd February  to the 31st May 2018)

She worked on the fabrication of nano- and micro-sized fibrous matrixes for biological applications. The activity has been carried out even in the laboratories of the Nanotechnology Institute of CNR in Lecce, under the supervision of Dr. Loretta del Mercato. Overall, the student acquired deep knowledge on the setup of the electrospinning apparatus and its optimization for generating polymer fibers of different diameters and different composition. In addition, she learned the basis of optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy for studying the morphology of the produced samples. Finally, she applied statistical analysis to analyze the obtained data and to compare the properties of samples obtained under different experimental conditions.

Muhammad Rizwan Aziz (from the 8th February  to the 8th June 2018)

He worked on the deposition of thin films of all inorganic perovskite CsPbBr3 by means of Pulsed Laser Deposition. First, he studied the scientific literature about the properties of this compound then he dealt with the formation of target starting from powders of CSBr and PbBr. Finally, he worked on the realization and characterization of perovskite thin films by PLD. He learned how to deposit thin films and characterize them by several technique like X-Ray Diffraction, Energy Dispersive X-Ray, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, Ellipsometry.

Noraiz Tahir (from the 2nd February to the 31st May 2018)

He worked on the project of constraining the physical parameters of molecular clouds possibly populating galactic halos by using microwave data such as those of the WMAP and Planck satellites. He learnt , under the guide of Dr. Achille Nucita, how to extract and analyze Planck data and wrote a paper with title “Constraining baryons in the M31 galaxy by Planck data” to be submitted to International Journal of Modern Physics D and co-authored by N. Tahir, F. De Paolis, A. Qadir and A. Nucita.

All the students were supervised by the project tutor Dott.ssa Francesca Giannotta. She accompanied them throughout the internship course, especially the administrative and bureaucratic aspects.
